    Hi

Whenever I try to use a download link, I get Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage. Some sites it works and some it does not. I’m using IE7, vista ult. and Norton 2008. Everything is set to allow IE7. On my brothers PC (same house) everything works fine.

    Example

http://www.brainybetty.com/SoundClips/blues.mid << a music file for a ppt. I have to use right click and save target as... to download the file, the link gives me an error.

I have reset all IE7 options, removed add ons, everything I could think of.

    Thanks!

From the MS KB I posted I had this in mind ....
Have you checked the Norton site for any updates? This may not resolve the problem as you post that you can download from some web sites and presumably can access the internet.

To eliminate Norton from the equation I would try disabling the firewall component - check that the Windows firewall is active and try a download from a site that gives the error message.

If it is a Vista problem I cannot help as I still use XP Pro - and will do for the forseeable future, although I have a Vista box which I dabble with occasionally.

    BTW ....
So do I - clicking the link opens Quicktime and the music plays.

I haven't had any problems downloading but when I click the link you posted, I get the same "page cannot be displayed" message using IE7 (Vista Home Premium, AVG Free and Vista's firewall).

When I used Firefox, I got the "what do you want to do with this file" download dialogue.

See that is my problem! I have all updates and I can’t seem to get around it. It should open a normal download link. It happens with other sites I try to.

Just for a test Miz, what happens when you go to this link? It’s a link to download tech demos from nvidia’s site.

    http://us.download.nvidia.com/downloads/nZone/videos/nzm_Cascades_tech.wmv
    I get the same error.

I clicked on the link and it opened in Media Player. I had a look and for me, this is the answer to get it to prompt me to download it. Open any folder, click tools>folder options>file types. Under the extensions column, scroll until you find mid. Click it to highlight it, then click the advanced button. Make sure the line that says "confirm open after download" is checked. Mine wasn't checked. After checking it, I was prompted to download the file as I would be any other file when I clicked on the link.

Do the same thing for wmv files.

It opens a new window along with Windows Media Player and then it takes pretty much forever (2 minutes in computer time is "pretty much forever" ;) ) to download the video. After the video finally loaded, it played.

OOPS! I forgot about Vista not having the file types dialog. Not a good move on MS's part IMHO. Anyway, my guess is that you need to change that setting. At the time I was running the Vista betas the only way I could find to change that stuff was by editing the registry. There may be a program available that will do it now. I'll see if I can find something.
