The reason to stay disconnected for as long as possible is a wish to minimize unprotected exposure. As I see it, outdated protection when going online is better than no protection ... ... or am I wrong?

I now understand that this triggers LiveUpdate to get set to "disabled" (disabled within " " meaning "box for enabled being unchecked ") but why does it get set to "disabled" during the first run, when LU updates itself and not immediately when I abort the first automatic launch of LU (due to being disconnected from the internet)?

    Hi Christer,

In regards to your question "As I see it, outdated protection when going online is better than no protection ... ... or am I wrong?" I would say that you are correct. The other way to look at the situation is that you have Norton installed and running, and it is therefore providing you with real-time protection. As long as you are connected to the Internet, and Norton is active, you effectivly minimize the risks. Of course, when your defenition and program files get automatically updated through LiveUpdate, your protection level goes up a notch

The bottom line is that while you should never let your guard down in regards to PC security, you can rest assured that Norton will provide you with the highest level of protection , so long as you keep the product updated. I hope this helps.

    Take Care,

    Michael

    Hi Michael,

this week I installed a system from square one and the owner wanted to use Norton 360. I had never seen Norton 360 before and when I checked the installation of LiveUpdate, it was very different from LiveUpdate installed "under" Norton Internet Security. There was no "Automatic LiveUpdate "-tab (with the scheduling and enabling) in options and there was no AluSchedulerSvc.exe running in Task Manager.

Can you confirm that LiveUpdate installs and behaves differently depending on the "context" (e.g. Norton Internet Security or Norton 360)?

If so, when discussing LiveUpdate, we should always include the "context ".

    Response to your question

    Hi Christer,

The 2008 versions of Norton AntiVirus, Norton Internet Security and Norton 360 have been rewritten, and the LiveUpdate feature now automatically checks for updates in the background, as long as your internet connection is active. The interface for Norton Internet Security is different than that of Norton 360, but the processes that run are the same, except that Norton 360 includes and includes a PC Tuneup function and a backup function.

If you are concerned that updates did not get applied, you can manually run the LiveUpdate feature by selecting "LiveUpdate" from the sub-menu of either Norton Internet Security 2008, Norton 360 and Norton AntiVirus 2008. When you select "LiveUpdate" from the menu, you will see the LiveUpdate process begin. You can manually run LiveUpdate for Norton 360 again, and when you see the message "All Protection and Program Files are up-to-date," you can click the "Close" button and then close the Tasks & Settings window.

In regards to the processes that run during a LiveUpdate session, most of them run in "hidden" mode and will not show up in Task Manager unless LiveUpdate is running.

I hope this answers your questions. If not, please reply back to this thread.

    Thanks,
    Mike

    Thanks Michael!

I always put a shortcut to "luall.exe" in the quick launch area and at least once a week I click it and run a manual session to check if updates that are not distributed automatically should be available. It was a long time ago it happened (updates available) but some time ago, it was quite common.

I reacted on the missing "AluSchedulerSvc.exe" (in Task Manager) but I didn't think of checking for aupdate, lucomserver and the numerous instances of LuCallbackProxy that run while the deed is done.

I was probably too baffled when Norton 360 took over the computer immediately after being installed. It took me a while to tame it but now, the user is back in control ... ;) ... !
