Alrighty, so my T7600 (Core 2 Duo @2.33GHz each) is on its way, and it is the fastest one I can plug into my Thinkpad T60p. Before I go to replace my current T2500 Core Duo, I have a couple of questions:

I want to set up a triple, or quad-boot system: XP SP2 (for emergency purposes only), Vista Ultimate x86 (which will remain my main OS), Vista Ultimate x64 (to start exploring the world of 64-bit), and possibly Windows Home Server.

I have 200GB to play with. I would allocate maybe 10GB to the XP partition, 100GB to Vista x86, the remaining 90GB for Vista x64, if I don't go the Home Server route, and if I do, 50GB for Home Server, and 40GB for Vista x64. Does this sound reasonable?

Also, do I need to purchase a 2nd license of Vista for the 64-bit version?

Are the following applications available in 64-bit? MS Office 2007, Firefox, AIM 6.5, VLAN player, AVG or avast virus scanners, and Diskeeper? I believe all of the drivers of my T60p are available in 64-bit. Maybe 64-bit is like Mac's. No virus scanner necessary (yet)??

Finally, where will I see the difference? T2500 vs. T7600...gaining 2MB L2 cache and 233MHz in CPU speed, or am I comparing apples and oranges? How will I benefit from 64-bit? Yet additional speed from what I hear. What else?

This will be fun! I'm such a geek. :D

    Thanks all! ;)

You can forget Windows Home Server: It will not install on a laptop.

And yes, you'll need a 2nd license for Vista. Although you get both 32 & 64-bit DvD's in the Vista Ultimate package, you only have a license to use one or the other.

As for 64-bit apps, only Avast has a 64-bit version (maybe AVG too, can't seem to find details).

Awesome. So basically, I need to find the drivers for all my laptop's hardware and find 64-bit versions for the software I want to use, correct? And if I can't find a 64-bit piece of software I'd like to run, there's always 32-bit emulation mode. Is my assertion correct? Everybody makes it sounds so painstakingly annoying and difficult. What is it that is so complicated? Sorry, if this is an uninformed silly question. The benefit of 64-bit just sounds incredible, and very very enticing. I am SO there. :)

Yes, 32-bit software (such as Office) will run fine on a 64-bit system.

32-bit drivers will not work on 64-bit hardware.

Well... because a lot of people are trying to use it with older hardware, so it may be hard to find 64-bit drivers. Specially printer and fax/scanner drivers seems to be a problem.

Ahhhhhhhh yea...Ok, well, if that's the issue, it should install without too many problems since my laptop is only a year old?

A lot of people on a different forum have also tried to dissuade me, as they said they needed to tweak about a million things, such as services, etc. All of that has to do with old hardware still?

Well, the reason stated by many to disable or at least not have automatically start services is to have the system boot up faster, free up resources, etc. You think that's all nonsense?

    YES

I don't need to start faster (I'm sleeping when my PC starts itself), and even if, those 2 or 3 seconds more are not going to kill me.

I also have more than enough resources :D

AWESOME!!!!!!!!! Finally, a voice of reason. Agreed on all counts, as I disabled some services one time and have experienced no speed-ups. As for the resources, ditto, haha...I only ever use half the RAM it seems, for example, and my T7600 is coming...:D

Off topic: Do you own, and pay for maintenance for this BBS yourself?

Decision made..................64-bit, LAY IT ON ME!!!!!!!

Alright, 4 out 4 people, whose opinions I respect, are now all saying the same thing. GO FOR IT, Crunch. :D:D:D

Do you think I should get one 2GB stick, to make it 3GB's, or two 2GB sticks for 4GB, albeit that one is wasted? Is there ANY benefit by going with more than 3GB?

As my hardware is no more than one year old, I'm hopeful that the driver issue will not be problematic. As for the software, like I said, I believe I can find 64-bit equivalents of what I'm running now fairly easily. And the rest, 32-bit mode.

Vista 32 has been nothing but an awesome experience for me. NO BSOD's. Everything that I run is now compatible with it, and I thoroughly enjoy the eye candy. :)

    ....................................:D:D I'm ready! :D:D................................

The only reason I'd want more then 2GB is that it would allow me to run more VM's simultaneously.

Right now, on my Vista host OS, I can run:

    • Vista Home Premium (with 512MB allocated)
    • Vista Business (with 512MB allocated)
    • XP Home (with 256 MB allocated)

with all other stuff I have running, that takes care of my available physical memory :D
