Hi. I am running Win XP sp 3. Something strange has happened to my Start/search feature.

I used to be able to check JPEG Image in the advanced option and all my jpeg images on my c drive would be displayed. Now the search grinds on and on until it reaches the end without one image to display.

If I uncheck all the choices below the type of file window and click search, it completes the search almost at once with no jpeg images found. Individually the only box that the search continues on and on is the "search sub folders" choice, the rest complete the search at once with now images. Also if I do a search of "pictures, music, or videos" /â€pictures and photos" I get everything that is on the drive, jpeg, gif, bmp, WMF etc.

I replaced my old hard drive with a larger one and transferred everything successfully about two weeks ago so I am wondering if I could have done something that is causing this to happen?

Is there something that will get me back to searching for .jpeg images only?

    Thank you. Troof

This is not a direct answer to your problem, but Windows Search can be less than cooperative at times :)

I suggest you download and use Agent Ransack which is a far superior search engine to that incorporated in Windows - I have used the Pro version for many years with total success.

Hi Pete, I did download Agent Ransack a couple of days ago but could not find away to search only for jpeg files.

The Help feature did not seem to offer anything for jpeg files. What am I missing?

Would still like to stick to the search method I grew up with. Thanks Troof

Enter *.jpg in the File name box, select a drive and click on Start. I'm working off the Pro version here.

Pete - O.K. I guess I didn't read about the wild card. Now is there a way to make the results show up in a thumbnail view? Thanks, Troof

I think not - best you can achieve is right click > preview, if that option is offered, on individual files.

Thanks Pete but it looks like I am back to the start of this thread. Most of my files are labeled with the date and a number. I guess I could use Picaso in a pinch but would prefer to use the start/search as I have in the past. Any other thoughts on this would be appreciated. - Troof

    OK - 5 suggestions ....

    1. Check that the Indexing Service is running on the hard drive(s) ....

Right click on the drive > Properties and see if 'Allow Indexing Service .....' is checked

    2. Start > Run > type in Services.msc > Enter and check the status of Indexing Service.

    3. Run the System File Checker .....

Start > Run > type in sfc /scannow > Enter - you may be asked for an instal lCD which must be at the same Service Pack Level as the installed OS.

    4. Make a Repair install of XP - again you will need an installation CD of the same Service Pack Level as the installed OS. If your install CD is retail as opposed to OEM you can slipstream SP3 into it.

    5. Set a System Recovery point and install Windows Search 4.0.

Pete - Well I have got it figured out but can not explain what happened.

After staring at the icons of my JPEG files in detail view I noticed that they looked some what different then what I remembered. I chose one photo and clicked on properties and the “Open With” box opened which showed the choices of programs to open the file with. As I scanned down the list I noticed the icon for “Picasa Photo Viewer” was the same one that was associated with all my JPEG files. I have no idea how that got there. Anyhow I then proceeded to click on the SeaMonkey program (my browser) as the one to always open this type of file. After doing this for the one file all the JPEG files were then corrected and now they all show up in my windows search when I search for JPEG Images in the more advanced options of the windows search.

I guess the problem is solved except not knowing how the “open file with” got changed from SeaMonkey to Picasa Photo Viewer. It is nothing I would do on my own. I wonder if my Picasa program did it for me some how. At least now I know.

Thanks again for your input Pete.

Programs often hijack file associations - I'm guessing that you installed Picassa recently?

Anyway glad to hear you found the cause of the problem :)
