Our external hard drive seems to be causing our computer to have a slow start up of about 5 minutes. Is there anything I can do to fix this without having to get rid of our external hard drive?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

You don't have to get rid of it - but unplugging would help;)

Look in the BIOS->Boot Sequence and make sure it isn't listed at the top of the boot order.

We have unplugged it, but, it is also where we keep our regularly used files so we can't keep it unplugged for too long. And it also requires a restart every time we do plug it in before we can access it, which then leads to another 5 minute wait.

I'll have my husband check that BIOS thing when he gets home since I am not familiar with that.

    Thanks Steve. :)

That's not right at all - given that it is a USB drive it should be recognised by Windows as soon as it is plugged in and/or powered up.

Now that I think about it, it usually has worked without a restart. But, the last few times when I connect it while the computer is still on, it just freezes.

Back to the BIOS thing from earlier, my husband doesn't dare do anything with it because he fears he'll mess it all up. So, I guess my post will never be resolved?
