Resolved disk clean up wants xp pro sp3 disk

while running disk clean up i got pop up that wanted me to insert xp pro sp 3 because there are unrecgnizable files.
i have only what dell sent with computer back 05. i think that is for media center.
what do i do? i did defrag and from what i can see it looks like i have free spaces within the green space.
having serious nervous breakdown please help.

 

Just use CCleaner to clean the junk files. And use Defraggler to do the Disk Fragmentation.

thanks for answering, but couldnt find free defraggler that will have to wait,since my 1987 volvo station wagon decided that yesterday was a great time for its fuel accummalator to mess up.
but what about using the cds dell sent with the computer instead of xp pro sp 3 disk that i do not have. i do know the xp media center is built on xp pro but.....?

 

Media center is just an add-on for XP Pro I believe.

 

The best way to find out is to try it, if it finds the files it needs job done, if not and all you have is a disc for Media Center you will either have to order Restore Discs from Dell or borrow an XP Pro SP3 Windows disc from someone to replace the files.

First I would run sfc /scannow from the Run box to check your file system, if that asks for the XP disc then you will know for sure that your file system is damaged.

What problems have you been having that prompted the disc cleanup?

 

on another computer now tried to run sfc / scannow it flashed up and havent seen it since.surely it dont work like that!
how can i get it to slow down so i can see it?

You have to type it into the Run box exactly as I typed it sfc /scannow the space between the c and / is important, there must be no other spaces. If that other PC was not XP but Vista or Win7 it has to be entered via the command prompt.

I have learned a bit more about sfc recently (last 24hrs) and there is a good chance it will immediately ask for the disc even if there are no problems. Try it and see, it all depends what you have on your hard drive. If your system was preinstalled it may be OK.

So the issue is actually that MSE does not start at bootup or have you fixed that issue?

 

no microsoft security essentials is not fixed. i didnt finish the clean disk because of the thing wanting the xp pro disk. i checked add/remove for windows defender and i still have its signutures which i cannot remove since when i clicked on it there is no remove. just "used" and "rarely "
and the comodo pro firewall is back but when my printer does its cycling it goes away.

 

mark just tried scannow and it just flashes up so fast that you have to be looking at the monitor to see it. any other way to do this?

 

i had a brillant thought,disconnect the printer and see if comodo pro firewall still comes up! oh i safely removed it and guess what? no comodo!!! but no printer either.
but mse still doesnt come up like it should and doesnt run scans like it should i reset time for 10am and no scan yet. and its 1035est.

 

update mse looked for updates but didnt scan. usually it looks for updates then scans
i am totally confused.

 

Open up MSE and see when it is scheduled to scan. It doesn't scan normally after an update. If you have it scanning daily, to me that is a waste of time. Once a week is way more than enough.

 

mr bill it is set for 10:00am today it looked for updates but did not scan and still hasnt scaned. i will have manually start it.which i will do now

 

What is checked and not checked in Settings on the scan. If you will notice it says around next to the time. I wonder how close to around they mean?

 

i started the scan at 11:19am.

 

After some head scratching I still cannot find any reason why Disk Cleanup should be asking for your XP disk.

Before you had MSE on the system did you use some other anti virus program. If so you may have not fully uninstalled it which may be causing some conflicts. Removal tools should be used to clean out any remnants they are available from the the AV's manufacturers site.

Windows defender should have been automatically disabled when you installed MSE, you do not need to uninstall it.

Comodo firewall includes anti virus, this should be turned off for it to run alongside MSE.

Did your scan with MSE find any infections?

before mse i had one care. and before that i had comodo firewall only i cant remember what anti virus thats been over 2 years maybe more. got rid of the firewall no mention of comodo anywhere on computer.
as for running disk clean forget it. i unchecked compress and got applying attribrutes and got error on that access denied. and it only had 10 hours and 1 minute to run.

 

finally got diskclean up to run no problem, unchecked compress old files.
no demanding xp pro sp3 disk either.
