Resolved No sound, no device listed?

Greetings all!

My son brought over his computer "Mom, there's no sound ". I haven't been able to figure out how to correct this or where to even start? (He's of no help and says doesn't remember changing anything.)

I'm not sure if his computer has a "sound card" or if it's one on the motherboard? (His computer was built by his uncle who lives too far away to be of any assistance in helping with this) so I'm hoping for someone here to guide me.

Here are a few computer specs I've managed to locate:
OS: WinXP Home, SP3
Motherboard: Intell Corp.
Model: D865GVHZ
Version: AAC72419-110
CPU: Intell(R) Celleron(R)

Checking via my computer>>hardware>device manager shows a yellow question mark by other devices>Multimedia Audio Controller

Using the run command: "dxdiag ", I found (under the tab) "Sounds "-- a device listed as:
Name: Modem #0 Line Playback (Emulated)
Device ID:
Manufacturer ID: 1
Product ID: 81
Type: Emulated
Default Device: Yes

In that same DirectX Diagnotics Tool, I tried the "Test DirectSound" icon. It provided me with the note: Directsound test results: Failure at step 3 (DirectSoundCreate): HRESULT= 0x8878000a (The request failed because DirectSound resources, such as the priority level, were already in use by another caller.)

I also checked under Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Device Properties.
Volume tab: No Audio Device
Sounds tab: Windows Default Theme
Audio tab: (nothing listed here)
Sound Playback:
Modem #0 Line Playback
Sound Recording:
Modem #0 Line Record
MIDI Music Playback
No MIDI Playback Devices (This is grayed)
Voice Tab:
Voice Playback
Modem #0 Line Playback
Voice Recording
Modem #0 Line Record

(In all instances the options for volume or advanced are grayed)

Whew, think I'm already in over my head! But would appreciate any help/guidance anyone can offer! (Please be aware of my beginner status).

This is the problem, there is no sound driver installed.

Right click on "Multimedia Audio Controller" then "Properties" select the driver tab and click on "Update Driver" follow the prompts, let windows find the driver and sound should return.

 

No luck..

I tried to update the drivers as suggested (following the prompts from the update wizard), but received the message "cannot install this hardware "
"The hardware cannot be installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software ". "Click back if you have the installation media such as a CD-ROM or if you know the location of the software ".

I do not have any installation cd and am totally clueless to where the location of the software might be?

Any further guidance will be greatly appreciated!

Did you try a System Restore at any stage?

When I "Googled" you Motherboard specs, it showed quite a number of users were having Audio problems. You may need to use a software program to identify what is in your computer as you say it was home built.
If you Google Belarc Advisor and install it, it will display all the Hardware/software/Programs in yourcomp. Cheers Neil.

Follow the link above and download, install and run the System Information For Windows by clicking on it. Do not install the scanner.

Run the program and select motherboard from the hardware list. Copy the North/South Bridge chipset details into your next post.

Then select Sound Device, if it just gives details as High Defnition Sound Device it will be on the motherboard. If it is a sound card it will give a manufacturers name and number, copy that into your next post.

With that information we should be able to find the correct drivers for you.

One thing I am baffled with is how the driver was removed

I'm just as confused as you are as to how the driver was removed in the first place....but if you knew my son, it probably wouldn't be any surprise. (But like I mentioned, he doesn't remember changing anything, but that doesn't mean he didn't!)

This should be the driver for the sound. It is on board, unless it has went bad which is a possibility...

 

Hi Vicky, just a thought , has he removed any games or such from his PC, my granddaughter put a game on my PC and when I removed it , it took my sound with it , it seems some games use your onboard sound ,
I had to insert the mother board disc and reactivate the sound .
Then it came back,

Mr Bill has given a link for the sound driver for your sound card.

I need the Sound Device information from your Sons PC to confirm if the sound is from a card (in which case I need the name and model number) or on the motherboard. SIW should give that information.

OWNER-CBA41CA1A Is this all the information it gave for Sound Device, did it have a name for the manufacturer?

Looking at the back of the PC, on the left edge is a row of various connections, are the speakers plugged in to that area or on a seperate connector in one of the horizontal slots lower down the back of the PC?

 

Sound driver

Went to the link provided by Mr. Bill and downloaded it (I think??). Where would I look to be sure that it did? At any rate, still no change.

The only sound device information that was given by the SIW was "OWNER-CBA41CA1A" as you noted. No brand, model or anything else listed there.

The speakers are connected to the back of the computer just below the monitor cable. There are 3 (colored coded) holes. I'm guessing they are for speakers, headphones and microphones? I have the speakers connected to the green one (which is the same color as the end of the speaker cord).

So my guess then, is that the sound card is one that is on the motherboard? (There are expansion slots, but nothing has been added to those except for the old dial-up modem when the computer was built).

Getting frustrated yet? I know I am!

You have no idea how much I appreciate your time and advice in trying to fix this problem!

It should try to get on line and find them. It usually will that way. When you downloaded the drivers, did you save them someplace? If so, go to there and it is probably a .zip file. Unzip it and then tell it to find it again.

 

To clear up a little confusion, some of which was caused by myself. I said in my last post that Mr Bill had given the link for the sound driver for your PC, meaning that was not for your son's PC. I was wrong, it is the same Realtek driver for your sons PC.

Follow the link Mr Bill gave, click on the button marked Download.
Then click the button next to "I accept the terms... "

A file download box should appear, click on Save, you then get the choice of where to save it, save it to the desktop so its easy to find. When the download is complete close all boxes and shut down your browser.

You will find the driver on your desktop, it is self installing so just click on it and it should install.

 

Hi Vicki, When you Downloaded SIW and saved to Desktop, you Double-clicked and clicked Run > you installed the software and had a shortcut icon on the Desktop. Double-clicking opened the program and did you scroll down to Hardware and was it expanded?
Did you see Sound Device?
Click on that and it should show the type/brand eg.Realtek AC'97 or other.

If no Sound Device is shown - I think you may have to get the Motherboard Driver set. Neil.

 

I doubled checked the info found on SIW and the Hardware info was expanded to show the "sound device "....that's where the info "OWNER-CBA41CA1A " was obtained.

I've also viewed the category "Devices" and looked under "Sound, Video and game controllers" and the ones listed there are:

but no mention of the Realtec AC'97 that I thought I downloaded and installed??

I also took a peak at the cagegory marked "system speaker" (also listed under devices) and that lists a Device ID as ACPI\PNP0800\4&35F762C4&0 but the status shows not started. Not sure if this is any pertinent information or not?

If I have to get the Motherboard driver set, how do I go about finding that?

You can get the drivers you need here. Click on Windows XP Home where it says select operating system and then click on drivers in the download type box. That will narrow it down for you. Your audio driver is there too. Install the chipset driver first, reboot and then try installing the audio driver.

IT'S WORKING!!! I'm sooooo excited!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you everyone for all your help!!

Now for the nity of it all.....I did download the realtec driver (thank you again, Mr. Bill!!) and had it saved to the desktop, but I had failed to actually install it (I really thought I had!)

There was a "folder" on the desktop, I opened it and in it contained many files. I managed to locate one that was a "readme.txt file" and opened it. Ha! It gave me the instructions on how to actually manually install/update the driver (but I had to figure out where the actual location was at).

I had used the sound troubleshooter to test sounds and thought I had heard them, I was sooo excited! So to double check that it was working, I put in a music cd....and bingo....there was music playing!!!

Now that I have it installed (finally and correctly!) may I delete those realtec things on the desktop?

You have no idea how grateful I am for all the help I received!! Did I remember to say "thank you "?!

Glad to hear you got it fixed. And, yes, you can delete the original file once you've installed it. Or, stuff it away in a folder somewhere in case you should ever need to install it again. Your choice.

 

You are quite welcome. Glad it is fixed. Like Zander said. It is you choice. If you save it you won't ever need it. Delete it and you will need it. lol You can always go back and get it if need be.

 

Vicki, I use a USB pen drive of 4GB to hold all Driver software I've Downloaded. Like Bill and Zander said - you never know when you might need it again and on a Pen/Flash drive it's a time saver.
I hope you've given your son a little speech about all your hard work?
