On a computer (XP pro SP3) which was reinstalled (by yours truly) two months ago, the owner was today prompted by Windows Automatic Update to install KB973687 dated 11/23/2009. Is this a false alert? I mean, why after two months and not immediately does WAU prompt for a year old update?

I was now informed that WinRAR 3.71 was installed yesterday. Can this be the "trigger "?

When I reinstalled XP pro SP3, I also installed all updates released (and still current) until and including october 2010. When done, a check at Windows Update confirmed that all current updates had been installed. KB973687 was not one of them and neither was it prompted for.

As far as I can see, MS08-069 does not refer to KB973687.

MS08-069 has been superseeded/replaced by MS10-051 and as far as I can see, this bulletin does not refer to KB973687.

I tried to figure it out but KB973687 is a mystery, well, to me at least. When I get to the computer, I will uninstall KB973687 and WinRAR 3.71 to see what happens at Windows Update.

I uninstalled KB973687 and WinRAR 3.71. When restarting, Windows Automatic Update prompted for KB973687. My conclusion is that installing WinRAR 3.71 was not the "trigger ".

I checked and found that SP3 was released on 5/6/2008 and KB973687 on 11/23/2009 which means that the update could not be included in SP3, no matter what.

Anyway, I don't understand why Windows Update didn't prompt for KB973687 when the system was reinstalled in october. Maybe one of those "things" that happen (rhetorical question)?

Simple: Microsoft XML Core Services are not part of the OS.

The user installed those at a later point. No idea what/when/how, and nothing to worry about IMNSHO.
