IOBit's Security 360 and Advanced System Care 3 both start at switch-on or reboot, yet their icons don't appear in the notification area.

If I click on Advanced Sytem Care's shortcut to open it and then close it, the icon is then presented.

This doesn't happen with Security 360, although it used to.

    What's going on?

They may be set to stay hidden.

To change that, right click an empty space on the Task Bar and in the menu that opens, left click Properties.

In the window that opens, on the Task Bar tab, click the Customize button under Notification Area. In the window that opens, click the name of the icon you wish to change and a drop-down list will appear. Make your selection from that list.

Once you've got them all set the way you want them, click OK and OK.

See if that sorts them out.

Sounds like Miz' instructions are for Vista or Windows 7. In XP, in Taskbar Properties, you'll only have an option 'Hide Inactive Icons ".

There may be a Preference setting in your software to hide or display the icon in the System Tray.

Although I no longer have an XP system to check, I did confirm the instructions by checking this Microsoft page before posting. According to Microsoft, there should be a Customize button.

    Hi all,

Can confirm Miz directions for XP. Just checked and they are correct and current for xpsp3.

Still Tony has a point. Options from within the programs may control whether the systray icon is shown.

If nether, I used to have this problem, still do, on ocassion, when explorer crashes and auto restarts the Avira icon would not. I would have to reboot or ctrl/alt/del>taskmanager end task on explorer and restart this my self. After an endtask and a restart via taskmananger Avira icon would reappear. Just thought I mention and throw this in for good measure.

Advice: don't let this issue fall by the wayside. Viri also like to cause issues with systray access.

Thanks to you all. Yes, I found I could customise the actions ok. It's early to say whether that has solved the problem, I shall have to observe over the next few days.

I see where I erred. I always uncheck "Hide inactive icons ". If do that then the Customize botton is grayed out. Thus I have never used that button since 2002.

Well, after a few days it seems that with one exception things have settled down.

The exception is the Volume Control icon, which frequently goes A.W.O.L.

When I go to Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices I find the box ticked. I have to untick it, click Apply, re-tick it and click Apply again and the icon re-appears.

    What could make it disappear?

I have the same problem with the volume control icon, and some other icons that are set to show, that don't. These are my Hotsync for Palm, and Power ISO.

I found a work around. Before you power down your system, disable your network connection, or if you don't do that, unplug your network cord.
Then on next boot up, everything will be fine.

This has worked for me for some time, so I haven't looked too hard for a solution.
The problem started in the spring 2010, when Flash Player was upgraded, and Direct X, was put in my system. Of course I have done a multitude tweaks and alterations to my system in the meantime, but something about updating seems to clash with normal taskbar operations.

Taking note of the boot up order, this is the last command before my Hotsync, power ISO, and VolControll begin:
    "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Ink\TCServer.exe -Embedding "
Does that mean anything to you?

Hope that helps, (I know I hate reseting my system after it boots)
    Cheers.
