I have a Dell Inspiron E1705 laptop + Windows XP that worked fine untill I have updated the WiFi driver. Since then I get exclamation mark on the device and I can't turn on the WiFi.

It had Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG , and v11.1 driver, but was occassionally dropping rate, so I decided to update the driver to the latest 11.5. Since then I got exclamation mark on the device and was unable to turn on the WiFi anymore, and when opening its proerties it prompts a message "ADAPTER STATE NOT FOUND IN REGISTRY" and shows that device does not work properly. Installation of the driver to "found new hardware" fails says driver "the system cannot find the file specified ". I tried to rollback the driver but it did not help. I tried to reinstall the driver but no help either. Dell technician tried to repeat that and nothing changed. We can see the WiFi card in the BIOS setup.

Dell replaced the motherboard and the WiFi card, and put Intel 4965AGN instead' but it did not help.

I tried using WinsockXPfix that some people suggested' but it did not help. Pressing Fn+F2 or any other way of enabling the WiFi radio did not work.

    In the services.msc I see:

Wireless Zero Configuration: | | Status Started | Startup Type: Automatic | Logs on As: Local System

Intel ProSet/Wireless SSO Service: | | Starup: (empty) | Startup Type: Automatic | Logs on As: Local System

Intel ProSet/Wireless Service: |Management service | Starup: (empty) | Startup Type: Automatic | Logs on As: Local System

Intel ProSet/Wireless Registry Service: | Registry | Starup: Started | Startup Type: Automatic | Logs on As: Local System

Intel ProSet/Wireless Event Log: | Event trace messages | Starup: Started | Startup Type: Automatic | Logs on As: Local System

    In Registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Ndisuio [Start]= 3

I tried changing it to 2, 1, 0 and to reboot bu no help.

I tried both Dell's drivers & Intel's latest drivers from Intel® Driver Update Utility for Intel® wireless adapters

The BlueTooth can be enabled and disabled via Fn+F2, biut not the WiFi.

Any suggestion other than reinstalling Windows XP would be appreciated.

    Thank you

    SW

Roll it back just like you updated it.

I have an Inspiron 1545 and I had the same problem. When I logged in a say a message that said the drivers could not connect. I put in my driver cd that came with my computer, and I downloaded all of the wireless drivers just to be sure. When I activated it with the buttons on the top of my keyboard, it started working.

Did you try downloading the drivers from the Resource CD (the driver CD) directly to a file it asks you to create?

The new wireless card's drivers are not available of the resource CD. Dell installed a newer wireless card than the one that came with the computer, i.e. it came

I tried toll-back & safe mode, but no luck!
The Dell Driver CD does not have the drivers for the newer wireless card that Dell sent me: Intel 4965AGN (the CD contains the driver for the older wireless card version I had : Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG)

Try updating using the direct download(s) from Intel vs the Intel Driver Update Utility.

The lastest version for XP is 12.4.4.5.
