On Saturday I upgraded 4 computers from SP2 to SP3. It was a lot of work!

Can't imagine why anyone wouldn't have upgraded by now to SP3. I did it as soon as it came out and had zero compatibility issues on two PCs chocked full of a variety of software. Took about 45 minutes to download and install per PC - completely painless.

Two of my computers have an AMD processor. There were reports of problems. So I delayed as long as possible. MS did come out with an update to prevent this problem, and I waited for it.
I did have a problem with the last computer. I had to abort and restart, then everything worked out.

Hi ackerberg, I have installed SP3 on 5 Home Built PC's without any worries and all have AMD CPU's. I originally Downloaded the ISO (as soon as it came out) and burned to Disc then used that each time to install on the comps, then went to MS Updates for the latest updates. Sweet as. Cheers Neil. :D

    Hi all,

I have been away from my computer since Feb. I am in the process of updating just about everything.

The news reported here has shocked me. Where can I get SP3 and what is the update for the AMD computers. I am really behind the eight-ball on this.

    Help!

Go to Update for Windows XP (KB953356). Install it.
Then go to windows update in IE and run it. If SP3 is not installed, you will have an option to install it. Make sure there are no programs running, antivirus, etc. The way to stop all programs is to run MSconfig, hit the services button, hide all the MS services and then disable what is left. After the install, go back and enable all services. Good luck.

    ackerberg -

Thanks for your reply. It sounds fairly simple, but I would prefer to download SP3 myself and install it myself. I never use Windows update. Instead I download the updates to my computer and install one by one.

    retiredlearner -

I appreciate your comments, but I don't think I will get the CD in time for the cut off date of July 13.

Does anyone know if Vista RTM applies to computers that you purchase with an OEM version of Vista? Can anything be done if that is the case?

This caught me completely unaware. TIA.

Ann, I can't see what System you are running, but I believe Pete was advising SP2 end of support date??
If you are running XP and install SP3 there is no immediate concern. Neil.;)
ps. I think you have to allow your system specs to be seen.

    KB953356: For non-Intel Processors

Install this update before you install Windows XP Service Pack 3 to prevent an issue in which your computer may restart continuously after you upgrade to SP3 on systems with non-Intel processors. Here is the link: Click Here

If you would like to download an SP3 ISO CD image and burn your own CD use this link: Click Here

Personally I like the idea of having a copy off-line for safety. You can always slipstream SP3 with your SP2 CD in case you ever need to do a fresh install.

I seem to recall reading that XP support will continue until ~April 2014.

Thanks to all - The deed is done. The update went flawlessly. I haven't played around with the computer much, so I am not sure if everything is working as it was before the update.

One thing I could not do was burn the ISO. Kept getting an error. I just installed the update I D/L.

This kind of thing is pretty scary and I appreciate all the help and information you provided. :D

The AMD issue was not really about the AMD processor but a problem with HP (and possibly other mfgs.) desktops with AMD processors. They used the same image an both AMD and Intel based computers. Early version of SP3 triggered the registry to run intelppm.sys driver causing a lockup on re-boot. A fix was added (see Scout321x 's post) and it shouldn't happen now. If you should have this problem just google "sp3 hp amd problem" and there is a lot of information out there on the fix.
