Using XP Pro SP3, all works normally, but when I want to defrag the message states that the drive is locked. Also won't let me scan drive.
I use System Mechanic to keep the system clean and running smoothly, and even that won't allow defrag. It also says the drive is locked.
As mentioned, everything works, but I can't defrag the hard drive.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Ransong, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

Try this, Click Start< All Programs< Accessories< Command Prompt. When the Command Prompt Window opens type fsutil volume dismount C: and press enter. If your harddrive is a different letter than C: then replace the C: letter with the letter of your locked harddrive. After that process is done close the command prompt and reboot the computer.

Now attempt to defragment the harddrive and see if its unlocked.

Also please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

Note: A common error is to forget to show your System Details in your profile:

Make sure to do the above when entering your System Details, thanks.

Sorry, that didn't work! I got a message of access denied....
I've been trying to make sure I'm logged on as the administrator, but haven't been
able to get it to recognize me.
Maybe that's where the problem is?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Ransong

Do you have at least 15% free space on the drive? If not you may need to clean out old files, programs and etc. to gain the free space.

Yes! In fact, only 25% of the C: is in use because I use that drive for software only.

I'm not sure what else to suggest. I see that your computer is running Windows XP Service Pack 2. You should upgrade to Windows XP Service Pack 3 and then see if you encounter the same issue.

    Think you found the problem.
Will leave it to more knowledgeable people to help solve that.

Try booting into Safe Mode. Select the Administrator account and try defragging.
