hi been struggling with this for a couple of days i think i got a virus on my laptop. i done a scan with avg and there were about 9 minor problems which i cleared and then shut down the computer. when i started the laptop again i got a message windows/system32/config problem i managed to resolve that with something i seen on the web but i now get a message on a blue screen saying autochk program not found - skipping autocheck. i have also installed another windows xp on the same drive. i have also copied the autochk program from the one that works into the one thats not working and tried again but it gets to the blue screen and then reboots every time and can't start it in any mode.

windows/system32/config problem would indicate a Registry problem. I don't know what you did to correct that but likely it didn't work.

Boot the healthy copy (your parallel installation) and browse to the Windows\System32\config directory of the crippled system. Look for any files with a .bak extension. Report back if you find those.

If no .bak files exist, look in the C:\System Volume Information folder of the crippled system. If you had System Restore enabled, there should be several Restore Points in that folder. They can be used to restore the system to a date prior to the problems. There are instructions for doing that in the "Sticky" at the top of this page. You may want to get someone to help you if you think it's too confusing. Backup your personal files first.

If none of those are available, you can consider running a Repair Install but with a Registry problem, that sometimes doesn't help. Still worth a try though. That will require you to have an XP setup CD that has the same SP as your system.

The last resort would be a clean install that wipes all data from the system drive and installs a completely new copy of Windows. That means you would want to use your parallel installation to copy any personal data that is important to you onto some other media.

Your system is so severely crippled and you have found no registry .bak files or System Restore files so you should copy your personal data off the old system to some separate media. Then wipe the drive and install a completely new copy of XP.

    No, nothing I know of.

Forget the Repair Install, go with deleting the partition, creat a new one and install a new copy of XP.

    Clean Install XP

Most certainly, but unless you have a retail copy of the install CD for XP it may be of no avail.

My guess is that you have a Recovery CD which will format the drive and restore it to the condition in which it left the factory, implying that it might wipe out the D:\ drive too. You need to read the manual very carefully to ascertain exactly what the Recovery CD does.

You probably have a DVD burner in the laptop and it would be much safer to burn all your data to DVD before attempting any form of recovery or reinstall.
If the C:\ drive is formatted (full, not quick) the answer is yes, but if the D:\ drive is untouched any viruses lurking there will not be affected.

If you have a retail copy of XP my notes below may be of help .....
If you follow this route you will need to install the chipset (motherboard) drivers - obtainable from the laptop manufacturer's website.
