    hi guys.

my roomate has a laptop and i have a desktop and a USB cable that can connect both of them.

i want to know if there is a way to transfer files from one machine to another with that USB cable...

or in any other way, for that matter. we want to swap files and are not sure how (a shared folder via the LAN is an option im "investigating" so im looking for a second option. the USB option seemed simple but i dont know if its possible)

    thanks.

I would add that if you have RJ45 Ethernet ports, as most laptops built recently do, you can get a router or hub and connect both machines to it. Another option is a device with a 'turnover' built into it. On one end it has a RJ45 male port and on the other it has a femal RJ45. Internally, it connects one computers send to the other computers receive and vice versa. You use an Ethernet patch cable and this device to connect both Ethernet ports.

I have a USB Peer to Peer 1.8m connector which comes with CD software and you just install to both computers and follow the instructions. It's real quick to transfer files between comps.

The brand is Digitus SuperLink version 1.20 and was purchased in NZ for $25.00. Try a Google and see if you can get one locally as it works real easy.

Don't ever connect your computers direct with a USB to USB link as it will do extreme damage to both comps!!

Buy the unit I've got and you will be able to connect safely, it has a special unit in the middle of the cable with the correct circuit info to enable safe use.

If you have trouble finding it, let's know and I'll see if I can get the info for you. Neil.:D

Another option that works for me is a USB-to-USB KVM switch. I have one from I-O Gear that works very well. The software is in a chip in the cable. I bought mine for about $40.

It will only transfer what you want it to. Some USB-to-USB devices were designed for folks that were upgrading from XP to Vista and they would transfer settings and all kinds of other stuff.
