I have tried to run chkdsk many times but it never works.

I get a black box that says WARNING: F parameter not specified
    Running in read only mode.

I have no idea what that means!
The black box runs to 100% and then just disappears.

I looked under 'help and support' which was no help. It gave a lot of letters like /f and /i etc and I had no idea what that meant either.
I tried chkdsk /f and it said the 'volume' was in use so would I like it to run the next time it started up. I clicked Y and restarted but it did not run. I tried 6 times and it still did not run.
How can I get chkdsk to run?

(It was so simple in 98SE and ME...)

Hi if you post your system specifications, operating system and any service packs you have loaded it will help everyone a bit more in understanding your problem. What antivirus are you running? I have seen Norton cause a few problems with scheduled chkdsk's.

Have you tried installing the recovery console and running chkdsk from there?

There are many 3rd party programs that causes problems with the ability to run chkdsk.

Try booting off the XP CD, and at the screen where it asks you if you want to install or repair, press R to start the Recovery Console. Log onto your Windows (you'll be prompted), then run chkdsk /r.

I don't want to reinstall or recover the OS! I have to hire someone to do that if I can find someone.A friend did that and he charged her $250!
I can't boot from the CD because it is an OEM CD.I can't boot from any CD. My computer boots automatically.

I do not know what they mean by a 'parameter'.

    I use Trendmicro Internet Security.

    I use Windows XP SP2

(Sorry, but I have to admit that I don't really know what either of you are talking about.)

The recovery console does not mean you are going to reinstall windows. It allows you to boot into a recovery mode where you can perform tasks like chkdsk.

But as you have an OEM disk supplied with your machine im assuming it is not a standard windows disk.

A parameter is a variable defining how you want chkdsk to run. If you open a command prompt window (Click start menu, Click Run, Type CMD and click open) and then type chkdsk /? it will show you all of the parameters you can use with chkdsk eg /F.

Have you tried disabling your antivirus/real time protection altogether and then scheduling a chkdsk and restarting?

The OEM CD is for installing the OS on this machine.

I clicked exit for the antivirus but when I restart, it comes right back on. I don't want to uninstall it because it is not easy to reinstall and I don't want to be without virus protection for a long time.

I saw all those parameters listed but I don't know what they are...or what to do with them.
This is the 3rd HD that Dell has put on this computer...would that have anything to do with the problem?

I think this disk will just never get checked...

There is nothing wrong with chkdsk...there is something wrong with me!
I was not familiar with the command prompt and after I clicked Y, I just shut the prompt off.
I kept trying and for some reason I hit enter the last time. It then told me it would run the next time I restarted, and it did.
Sorry for all the bother...I really am stupid when it comes to computers....
Thanks to all for trying to help...

You can also create a Recovery Console CD for XP.

Thanks go to wannabe1 from Geeks to Go for this one.

This is a download of an .iso file of just the Recovery Console for XP.
Burn to CD with Nero or other 'disc image' capable tool and boot.
It looks just like the start of a normal XP CD, but will only offer the Recovery Console by pressing "R. "

All normal Recovery Console procedures can be run from this utility.
    Direct download: http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso

Right click on your C drive in windows explorer and choose properties then the tools tab then the error check/check now button.

The next window has two check boxes---check both of them and OK.

There will be a small info window that says this has to be scheduled for the next time your computer is booted. Say OK and the next time you start your computer you will get a screen that says it is running check disk.

When it is finished it will continue to boot into windows.

Whiskeyman, you type faster than I do...

Whiskeyman....but why would I want a recovery console CD? Isn't there something called that in Windows XP. I would never even try to use it anyway because I am not experienced enough. I don't want to fool around with something that I don't know anything about and cause my computer to get all messed up...
My computer boots automatically...it doesn't use a CD.

We are getting off track here...all I wanted to know about was the chkdsk, but thanks anyway...

It sounds like the command prompt is a lot easier than this.
My C drive is found in My Computer...I have never seen it in windows explorer when I go there to check Seamonkey profiles or cache files, but then, I was never looking for it there.

We are trying to help you. If you don't want to follow the advice, you'll have to live with the fact that chkdsk won't run on your system.

Recovery Console is part of Windows XP, but it has to be separately installed.

Have a look at this article: Installing Windows XP Recovery Console.

The article also links to Microsoft's article How to obtain Windows XP Setup disks for a floppy boot installation which will get you the Recovery Console if it is not on your OEM CD.

But it does run on my system, Arie. See my previos message. The reason it didn't run on my system was because I did not click on enter in the command prompt because I was not familiar with it. Once I did that it worked fine. It wouldn't run because of my stupidity, not because of a problem with my computer.

My computer claims that it will boot from a CD, but it doesn't.
I had bought Partition Magic when the computer was new. It said to check to see if it would boot from the CD. I put the CD in the drive and nothing happened.
(I am a 79 year old dumb lady who learned by clicking on things to see what would happen...so you see I am beyond help in many things.) A lot of what I know I picked up here by reading posts of other people, and I am very grateful to the people on BBS!...

I looked at it but it said the Recovery Console should be used by Advanced Users only...I am most certainly not advanced and that is probably why I didn't know what they were talking about. It was way over my head.
But thanks for trying to help.

OK, like I said before, you'll have to live with the fact that chkdsk won't run on your system. Good chance it is because of some 3rd party software.
