I have already installed it, and it seems to be working quite well. I guess only time will tell.

I installed it on thursday. A bloody long download on a 56K Modem! Installed fine, although it took 15mins or so. No changes to the GUI though. The disc was heavily fragmented after the install so I recommend running your dfragmenter after.

I am a Win98se dude lurking in the bushes waiting for XP Home to be what I would call finalized meaning install with no downloads.

Do you think MS is working on SP2 as we speak?

When could I expect to buy XP with SP1 on the disk?

Is it really worth all the fuss?

The only reason you really "need" SP1 is if you have NOT been updating your computer with Windows Update. The security and bug fixes have all pretty much been addresed via WU, but there are a few little features in SP1 that might be worthwhile. You might want to check out the Preview to find out if its worth it to you.

Here's the thing, I run Win2k, my brother runs XP and on dialup. If I were to download the file (I got cable) from the top of this thread and burnt it to CD for him. Would this be, in effect, the same thing as what Windows Update would be giving him.

THX

Yes and No....

Windows update will scan his system and will only give him the parts he need (typically around 30MB). The file linked above is the full SP1, if he installs that, he'll have everything he needs too.....

Not happy with EULA

What is Microsoft trying to do?

(Copied from the EULA of WinXP SP1, which is called SUPPLEMENTAL END USER LICENSE AGREEMENT)
Quote:
* The OS Components may include the Microsoft .NET Framework. You may not disclose the results of any benchmark test of the .NET Framework to any third party without Microsoft's prior written approval.
I am not happend with it. What's so special about .NET Framework? Why I can't disclose my usage report (in their words results of any benchmark test)? We can simply extend this sentence a bit... Microsoft may perform any underground behaviour (not directly noticable by user) and users aren't allow to boardcast their discoveries.

I am still refusing to accept the unacceptable agreement set by Microsoft.
