A couple of months ago I got a virus that attacked my operating system. I took my computer to a trusted computer repair shop, and the technicians there used a program called Combofix to eliminate the virus.

Prior to the virus, I could plug my digital camera into the USB port on the front of my computer and would hear a ding-dong and a menu would pop up with several options for download the pictures from camera to computer.

After the virus and repair, when I plug my camera into the USB port, I hear the ding-dong, but no menu pops up.

In trying to trouble-shoot this problem, I tried plugging my external hard (Buffalo) drive into the USB port and the computer doesn't recognize the hard drive.

I've plugged my camera into my daughter's computer and all is okay - I hear the ding-dong, the menu pops up, and the pictures are downloaded to her computer. I've resorted to downloading the pictures to my daughter's computer and having her email them to me, but that's an inconvenience to both of us.

I've tried plugging both my camera and the external hard drive into the USB ports on the back of the computer, which I know are working okay - the two printers and a scanner that were plugged into those ports work.

I don't know what to do to try to resolve this problem. I'm wondering if something has been blocked that's preventing the pop up menu from popping up. Do you have any recommendations?

When you plug the camera or external drive into a USB port - front or back - are they recognised in Windows Explorer? The ding dong indicates that the USB device has been recognised by Windows

Try running the Autoplay Repair Wizard
