    G'Day Folks,
Need help with this interesting problem please.

Startup sound effects from sound scheme in windows XP Pro sp3 do not play the selected (any) sound.
!! All other sound functions are OK.
It appears as though the sound has been redirected to the motherboard speaker instead of playing through the external speakers.
When adjusting the sound via the System Icon volume, when you would hear the default sound coming through the external speakers, all I get is a beep from the internal motherboard low level speaker.

    In more detail:
The sound output from the sound schemes like the "Start Windows" sound etc cannot be heard when the system starts!

Sounds play if we go into the "Sound and Audio Device Properties" and all other sounds play OK, i.e. CD Player, web sound, Windows Media Player, RealPlayer, etc., all play OK

As I said, the sound that you get when you adjust the volume control is usually the default "Ding.wav" which you hear through the external speakers, however when we adjust the sound, all we get is the "beep like" sound from the low level motherboard speaker.

It appears to us as though a setting was inadvertently changed by some update or whatever ? that appears to have redirected the Sound Scheme output to the motherboard speaker instead of the external speakers or disabled it i.e. the startup sound from playing !

To those who may attempt to answer this problem and get me a fix, please remember that all other sound output and software and CD Players work fine !

Other account users on this workstation can hear the sound scheme startup sounds, it is only my user account that cannot hear the startup sounds on this workstation !!

Only the Windows Sound Scheme output at startup and any other default sounds from the sound scheme do not play or are heard other than when testing / playing them in "Sound and Audio Device Properties" when they can be heard through the external speakers!

We have tried Kelly's 211 - did not fix it,
We tried changing sounds - did not fix it,
We tried different sound schemes - did not work,
We tried installing K-Lite Codec Pack - installed OK but did not fix it, etc., etc., etc., .............. etcetera.

Windows Audio services are started and on automatic !

We ran all the usual trouble shooter ideas with no result - restore is not an option - too many other updates have occurred since we noticed the sound scheme output problem.

We posted the problem on "justanswer.com" and got all the same suggestions we had already tried plus a 100 or so we tried that did not get suggested.

From my experience I would definitely suggest that a registry setting got changed which redirected the output from the sound scheme to the internal motherboard low level speaker instead of to the external speakers.

Oh yes, we did do a search and found one similar issue - but no resolve.

Any ideas please for a fix ?

This is one (1) bug that we have not tracked down a fix for as yet!

Hi pcbugfixer. Well it sounds to me that you have tried a lot of methods of troubleshooting this issue. Since you mentioned that the Windows sounds work on a different user account and not on your user account then I would suggest that you create a new user account and then transfer all of your settings and documents from your account to the new user account that you will create. For more information on how to transfer data from one account to another read this, How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile in Windows XP.

    G'Day Evan Omo,

    Thanks for reply.

Good suggestion, we have already done that, however we were after the fix
for the specific issue, i.e. the registry or other settings that are altered or corrupted.

The fix would obviously be faster and better, I think, as the New User creation and transfer takes longer to perform.

Ok try this fix, click Start< Run and type regedit and hit enter. Once Registry Editor opens highlight Hkey_Current_User. Once it is highlighted look on the right column which will show a Reg_SZ value with the name (default). Right click this value and hit delete. Reboot the computer and test.

    G'DAy Evan Omo,

That worked immediately without re-booting !

Now the question is, what made you think of this and what does this key have to do with the sound Scheme output ?

I am now re-booting anyway to ensure the fix sticks.

Yup, it stuck and the sound scheme sound is back - Thank You "Evan Omo"

Your Welcome. I am glad the fix worked for you. How I found the fix was I googled your problem and found a similar problem that another person was having and one of the solutions was the one I had you try. I'm not sure what that registry key had to do with the sound scheme since I'm not a programmer but regardless I'm happy that this issue is now resolved. :)

    G'Day "Evan Omo ",

Thanks again for the inforamtion and fix.

I performed many Google searches and did not find what you obviously found!

Do you remember the search word(s) and the URL for the suggested fix - please. (handy to know the search behavior and resultant details for Google for future reference)

Hi guys. I just wanted to thank Evan as well. Your fix in post #4 worked for me, too. I lost my windows sounds due to an unusual hard restart a couple weeks ago. They wouldn't play as test sounds either. I tried just about the same list of fixes as pcbugfixer and this is the only one that worked. Thanks again! And thank you to the admin that reopened the thread so I could post!
    Take care,
    Bob
