Evan - it appears Windows Search 4 only searches the desktop, so Companion must be used to search elsewhere.
Is this accurate?
Not quite. If you click Start< Search and at the bottom where it says folder click the button that has 3 small persiods on it. From there select your harddrive. After your harddrive directory appears in the folder box you should be able to search for something from there.

Hold the line - it won't search from there.
Gives message "Not Indexed. Use Companion".
So I'm now back there. It's what I used to have, but not nearly as fast as Windows Search 4.
You have to index the files on your harddrive before you can search for them. To index those files click Start< Control Panel< Performance and Maintenance< Indexing Options. Click Modify and put a checkbox next to your harddrive. After thats done click apply and ok. Now your harddrive will show up on the list of locations being indexed. Depending on how many files are on your harddrive it may take a while for Windows Search to index your harddrive. Once indexing is complete you will be able to perform a search for files on your computer.
Next copy the contents of your Windows XP CD to your hard drive. Just create a folder (I used \XP-CD), and copy all the contents of your Windows XP CD in that folder.

Using IsoBuster, select the "folder" Bootable CD, and right-click Microsoft Corporation.img. From the menu choose Extract Microsoft Corporation.img, and extract it to the folder on your hard drive where you have your Windows XP files (E:\XP-CD in my case).
I need you to switch to category view in control panel and go to Performance and Maintenance< Indexing Options where you will be able index your harddrive in order to use the Windows Search feature.

This is SO strange.
My control panel looks like the classic view EXCEPT there is no blue section to the left as in the screen shot.
I tried switching the start menu between the two, but it made no difference.
How do I get that blue section?
I have no way of changing the view.
The only view offered is the drop-down menu which is non applicable.
