Win XP Issue: I started getting "Page fault in nonpaged area" messages. It turned out to be memory which I had to replace. I am able to boot into safemode with networks. I am in that mode now writing this. I canboot into regular windows, but with problems.
At two different times I have been able to boot into normal windows and everything seem to work fine with full access to programs, applications and games. Now, when I boot windows, there are only 19 to 20 tasks running and no access to the network. It is like it is stuck in safe mode with no network.
I have tried system restore tool (while in safe mofe) and the from a "known good point" option from the F8 boot up. Nothing seems to work.
I want to avoid a reinstall if possible. This is a dell demension 5150 with 2gb of memory.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

1. The first thing I would do would be to run the system File Checker in Safe Mode to make sure that you don't have any corrupted Windows files.
2. Boot into Safe Mode and click Start< Run and type sfc /scannowand press enter. Have your Windows XP CD handy in case SFC needs a file.
3. If, after running SFC your still experience problems when booting up in normal mode then it looks like you are going to have to use the Windows XP CD to repair the installation.
4. Boot from the Windows XP CD and when setup has finished loading press R to open the recovery console. 5. When the recovery console opens it will ask you which windows installation you want to repair.
6. Type 1 and press enter.
7. After that it will ask what the administrator password is. If you don't have one leave it blank and press enter otherwise type it in.
8. After thats done type chkdsk /r and press enter. The process will take a while. Let me know if it finds any corrupted Windows files.
9. After check disk has finished type exitto quit the recovery console. Then press F3to quit Wnidows setup. See if the computer will boot normally now.
10. If the computer does not boot up successfully then boot from the Windows XP CD and and go back into the recovery console.
11. Enter the command fixboot and press enter.
12. Enter the command fixmbr and press enter.
13. Quit setup again and attempt to boot the computer.
14. If the computer still fails to boot into normal mode then Perform a Repair Install.
Let me know if your were able to boot up the computer in normal mode.
First, thanks very much for the help. Unfortuately, the SFC /scannow command had no effect and I am not able to find the Windows XP CD for my Dell so I can not get to the recovery console.
I am thinking that I may have to go do a dell restore, something I want to avoid if at all possible. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Since you tried SFC and you don't have a Windows XP CD do you think you could borrow an XP CD from a friend or coworker? At this point it looks like you could either borrow an XP CD from someone you know to repair your computer or use the dell restore CD which will restore your system to how it came originally. If it turns out that you have to use the dell restore CD then I would backup all your important data before running the restore.
I got a dell xp home edition cd from a friend and tried the suggestions offered. the chkdsk went through its 3 phases and at the end reported that one or more errors were fixed. No details were given. Trying to start in normal mode came up with the same results as before.
fixboot ran fine with no errors reported.
fixmbr reported that the file was damaged and fixing it might make the data unreadable. Ran fixmbr and it reported that the mbr was rebuilt/replaced. tried to boot in normal mode and no luck. Same as before.
I moved on to do a repair install. This turned out to be a bad thing. During the install windows components phase a number of files could not be found. I elected to cancel their load and continue. The result is that the system will boot in normal and safe modes, but both are useless as many of the services are not running. Unlike before, I cannot get to the internet in safe mode.
When you boot up in normal mode try clicking Start< Run and type services.msc and press enter. Take a look at Black Vipers Services Guide. You could have some of your services disabled. I would like you to verify that all your services are on their default state. If you find any service that is not in its default state please change it. Also click Start< Run and type msconfig and hit enter. Make sure the normal startup option is selected. If it is not then change the startup selection to normal. If those options don't get your machine back to normal then it looks like you might be SOL. Sometimes your best option is to format your harddrive and start over. It sounds harsh but I am only suggesting it because I have ran out of suggestions for you to try and there doesn't seem like there is any hope for your current Windows installation. I would back up all your important data that you wish to save and perform a clean installation of Windows assuming that the suggestion that I listed above does't work for you.
