I'm running WinXP MCE on a Compaq about 3 years old. I was wondering if anyone could explain to me why the speaker icon does not show in the system tray. It used to, and I checked Sounds and Audio Devices in Control Panel and the checkmark is there to show the icon in the system tray. I also checked the properties of the Start Menu and Taskbar, and the "always show" is showing on the speaker icon, but it doesn't show. The only time I saw it recently was after the March Microsoft Upgrade and when I rebooted, the speaker icon was there. But after I shut down the computer and turned it back on the next morning, it was not there. It's baffling to say the least.

    This sometimes works:

Go to Start > Run, type regedit, press Enter and navigate to registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify.

In the right-pane there are two entries: IconStreams and PastIconsStream, right-click and delete them, then restart the computer.

PeteC: I don't know what to do once I get to the site and see the line 320. When I click on the message there's a whole page of registry settings. Do I need all that just to get the speaker icon to show in the system tray? I don't even know what it says and how I get it into the registry.

Click on line 320 'Restore Volume/Net icon to Notification Area' .....

A download window opens - save the file netvol.reg to, say, My Documents - it is a registry file.

Right click on the file > Merge. This puts the entries in the Registry.

A reboot may or may not be necessary.

All the files on that page open up a download window, but line 320 only opens up a very long page of entries and I can't find a way to download it. Sorry if I seem stupid, I'm really not, but I have not worked with these kinds of things in the past.

I've no idea what's going on there - clicking on Line 320 'Restore Volume/Net icon to Notification Area' should bring up a download window.

Try right click and select 'Save Target As'

The file is too large to post as an attachment here.

    Hi PeteC,

I just did the same thing as mickey918 and he's right. There's 8,514 lines and 176 pages (according MS Word).

However, mickey918, if you go to Kelly's site in Internet Explorer and click on the file, you'll get a download box.

PeteC, why won't SeaMonkey do the same thing?

No idea what's going on there - if I click the link in the thread I go straight to Kelly's page, scroll to line 320 and click - the download box appears

jpChris - I know nothing of Seamonkey to the extent I have never seen it on screen :)

Thanks a lot, guys. Here is what I did. I am using FireFox 3.07 as my browser. I went to the file, right clicked on it and click on "view this page in I.E." When MSIE opened, the download box was there. I downloaded it to my desktop, made a backup of my registry, merged the file, rebooted my computer and not only is the speaker icon there, but now it is showing the "safely remove hardware" icon, which hasn't been there for a long time. Thanks for all your help. I really like this BBS. You guys are great!

O.K. I wonder what's going on here. The icons remained in the system tray all day. When I turned my computer off last night they were there. When I turned it on this morning, they were NOT there. I went to that file (I had not deleted it yet) on my desktop and "merged" again, rebooted it again and there they were! What is changing my registry and taking those out, I wonder? I run a registry checker every day (Registry First Aid) and CCleaner, but that's about it. Oh, I also run Spybot. Could one of these be doing it?

I wonder why you do that - what have you set CCleaner to clean up?

If you reboot now without running those 2 apps do you still lose the icons?

Pete, I don't know why I do that, I guess I was told or read somewhere that you should run these programs on a daily basis. I just rebooted my computer without running either of those programs and the icons are still there. I've got CCleaner set at it's original settings, except I removed the click on "cookies" and "FireFox ". I just noticed under the "windows" section at the end that "RegEdit" is checked. I wonder if that is the problem.

I would think so. Easy enough to check - run CCleaner without Regedit checked and reboot.

CCleaner is a useful tool, but you should always check the default settings - of any program - to ensure that those settings are compatible with what you want the program to do.

As for Registry checking - IMHO not necessary at all and Registry Cleaners should only be used sparingly in extreme circumstances, e.g. when a program fails to install because it claims that a previous version is already installed, yet it has been uninstalled. In this case a registry search for reference to that program and deletion of the appropriate keys will generally allow the new version to be installed.

Registry cleaning should be avoided - rarely beneficial and any performance gain unoticeable and the downside is that there is a strong possibility that it will do more harm than good and even render the computer inoperative.

The best recommendation I can give you is to leave the Registry well alone, except in special circumstances as noted above. You will find this view echoed by many on the Board.

You're welcome, but please post back with confirmation - or otherwise - that clearing Regedit in CCleaner was the culprit :)

O.K. Pete C, it appears to be the Registry Checker. Here's what I did: I ran CCleaner and rebooted and the icons were still there. Then I ran the Registry Checker, but I mistakenly shut the computer down instead of rebooting. When I turned it back on, the icons were NOT there. I've restored them again, and will give it another try with the registry checker and let you know.
