I recently downloaded alot of music filedsand am getting close to filling up a 160g HD, I assume it would be expected to slow down the computer? I also havea slave drive internal of 20g. If I buy an external drive and move all the music files onto that and the slave, should the speed of my computer increase considerably?

Hi bernyx. It depends on how many programs you have on your computer. If you move all those music files onto an external drive it could possibly speed up your computer. If you disable uneeded startup programs and remove programs that you don't use then your computer should be fine. I would try and move the music onto an external drive and see if you notice any difference in your computer speed. How much harddrive space is being used by the music files?

More to the point how much free space is there on the drive? If this is <15% it is likely you will see a performance loss. Ideally min 20% should be free.

If your free space is minimal the defragger will not function and grossly fragmented files will eventuall slow down the computer.

I'm not home now, but If I remember correctly, there's about 15 gig left of free space out of 160, I did cut out alot of startup programs also but when I get back to my computer I'll ask if there's anything else I can cut.

Please confirm if the executable exists - should be here ....

    C:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\binaries\msconfig.exe

Please also confirm that if you type regedit in the run box that the Registry Editor opens.

OK - open the Registry Editor by typing regedit in the Run box and navigate to .....

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\MSCONFIG.EXE

In the right pane, next to Default, it should show:

    C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe

If it simply states Default, right click on Default > Modify The path will be shown in the Value Data box. Check it against the above and then click Cancel and exit the Editor.

Is this the correct path shown?

    :confused::confused::confused:

Rather than tell you how to create the key for msconfig in the registry I'm sending you over to the Malware & Virus Removal forum - I have a feeling that you may be infected.

Please go to that forum and read

*** READ THIS BEFORE POSTING IN THIS FORUM ***

and post the logs requested in a new thread and reference this thread by URL in your intro.

Well I don't know quite how you managed that, but I've fixed it :)

    I would disable ....

Jusched - Java update scheduler and check manually once a month

teatimer - Spybot applet - you will be asked to disable for malware analysis anyway

but in reality disabling all or any of those is not going to improve performance.

You can disable the AOL software on startup. Yes they can be launched when you need to run them manually.

You can disable if you wish and if problems arise, i.e. some aspect of AOL does not work then re-enable and reboot.
