I know I have to copy various programs to my new computer but I would like to have the same set of desktop icons set up as a guide.

Is there an easy way to copy all the desktop icons at once?

If they're on the desktop chances are they are only shortcuts.

I still don't see the need to copy them, wouldn't a printout do as a checklist?

But if you must any media (floppy/memory stick etc) will do the job.

Use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to transfer all your personal settings and files onto a Flash Drive or another hard drive. Then you can import them to your new computer.
You'll find it at Start\Programs\Accessories\System Tools\Files and Settings Transfer Wizard.

    Thanks for the suggestion, guys.

I had forgotten about the Transfer Wizzard.

Even tho my desktop icons are mostly all shortcuts incl shortcuts to websites, I would still like to transfer all the icons at one time so I could then test them on the new desktop to see which need addl work.

Can I just copy the Desktop icons found in Documents and Settings>(user)>Desktop?

    That'll work just fine.

Take a look in the Documents and Settings>(ALL user)>Desktop too. Some programs install their icons in there and you'll see them on the Desktop but not in the <user> folder.

    Surferdude2,

Thanks, I have noticed that I have a couple of icons in <allusers> also. I did not know it was purposely done.

Some programs install for All Users by default, others give the choice of All Users or Current User.
