My mom messed up her laptop (HP) the other day, and I'm trying to fix it for her. Sadly, she never created backup disks, so I can't opt for using System Restore. Windows gives me the Unexpected Shutdown screen with the options for Safe Mode, Last Good Known Config. etc. Windows will not boot up using any of these options. A blue screen pops up for about .005 seconds and the system reboots. I'm running a HDD Diagnostics test right now to see if that will turn out any results, but I doubt it will. If someone has any helpful advice, it would be much appreciated.

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

Without the Recovery disks you clearly have a problem, but this may be a hardware error.

Does the laptop not have a recovery partition? There is generally a message on boot re. hit F11 for emergency recovery - there is on my HP Compaq nx6310.

The laptop doesn't have a recovery partition. It's really weird.

Have you access to an XP install CD of the same flavour as that on the laptop, i.e. same SP. If so you may be able to enter the Recovery Console and run chkdsk /r or even a repair install using the COA on the laptop. May not work as the current install is likely to be OEM.

Do you know anyone else with exactly the same laptop and a set of disks?

Alright. I've contacted an old friend in another state who has the disks. They're probably not going to get here for the next three days. Could you given me instructions on what to do when it gets here?

    Sure ....

Boot the computer and enter Setup (BIOS) - F10 on my HP or F9 for boot order - You would be advised to download the manual from HP to confirm - and check that CD-ROM/DVD is the first boot option.

    Open the drive.

Close down the computer and insert the first Recovery disk in the drive and close it.

Reboot and follow the on screen instructions.

If all turns out OK make a copy of the Recovery disks before returning them :)
