    Hi all.
Its been a while since i wrote, guess thats good news lol.
well I'm actually writing for my daughters computer problem.
    its a AMD atholon64x2 4400 160 gig 2 gig ram xp-sp3. (video onboard)
whats been happening is the video signal is shutting down like its hibernating but wont wake up, but the funny part is that if she is listening to music it will still be playing, so the computer is still awake just a black screen. only way to get it back is to restart.
now I've played with the power settings, changed it to leave everything on,
as of now it seems to be happening every 6-8 hours of staying on, but this is good, it was worse a couple days ago,
it all started couple weeks ago with the blue screen of death and the computer restarting, and this signal loss was every couple hours. so i started to eliminate things that were done within the past few weeks.
first i removed a cheep wireless pci card i put in so i could disconnect the LAN cable, still the same so that wasn't it.
then i remembered i put a cracked copy of Norton 2009 on her machine, well i uninstalled that and put a legit copy of bit defender 2008 and scanned the computer, well it found a few things and i deleted everything, BANG since then the BSOD has disappeared the system has not crashed since (4 days now) and also since then we left the computer on with no power saving, and it seemed the video loss was fixed also, well after about two days the video crapped out again, (same as before the cpu is still running playing music)which brings us to today, and like i said its happening about 6-8 hours of staying on, and it will happen in the middle of her doing something not just during a idle time.
so I'm sure I'm leaving vital information out but i will gladly answer all replies.
    thank you very much.
one last thing the motherboard (asus M2A-VM), CPU, ram, have a 1 year warranty which ends at the end of this month if anyone believes its related to these parts.
    Keith:confused:

Hi Keith. I would also suspect that a malware infection could have caused some problems. Download Malware Bytes Anti Malware from here, http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php and do a thorough scan of your computer as well to make sure there are no nasties on it. :)

Could be a hardware problem but first we have to make sure that your system is reasonably clean.

You can try changing the mouse from PS2 to USB and see if it solves your problem. You could also make sure your drivers are up to date for your graphics card. If those options don't work you can try replacing the monitor. Before trying those options though we need to make sure your computer is free of infections. Post in the malware and virus removal forum as inidicated by Arie. Once you are free of infections then post back here in this thread.
