I've noticed my laptop getting slower and slower. It wasn't apparent how bad it was until I had out-of-town visitors and they mentioned it.

I know the Thinkpad has a lot of startup programs, but if someone could review my HJT log and see areas of improvement. I'm a novice at the HJT log. But, don't see why I need the msn.com and microsoft references.

Also, I have AVG now, and don't use Symantec -- if someone could help me remove those reminders and its associated memory hogs, that'll be great.

    My HJT log below:

Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2
Scan saved at 11:06:40 AM, on 1/3/2009
Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)

I'm no expert on HJT logs but it does look like you have two antivirus programs installed and running...AVG and Norton (Symantec). That will slow down any system.

If you haven't paid for a Norton subscription, it's not doing anything but slowing you down anyway so remove it. Use the Norton Removal Tool for the version you have.

If you'd rather keep Norton and have a paid-up subscription, uninstall AVG.

Hi helpme2008. Delete the following entires in your hijackthis log, O20 - Winlogon Notify: ACNotify - ACNotify.dll (file missing) and O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file).

I agree with Miz. You should have one Antivirus application installed so which ever one you don't use uninstall it.

    Please do the following:

    1. Click Start< Control Panel< Add/Remove Programs and uninstall any programs that you dont use
    2. While in the add/remove programs window click the button that says add/remove windows components and uncheck the checkboxes next to Indexing Service, MSN Explorer, Windows Messenger and click ok when you are done.
    3. Click Start< Run and type services.msc and press ok. The Services window will open. Highlight the following services, click properties and under startup type click disabled and hit ok. Do this ONLY for each service that I list below:
    Distributed Link Tracking Client
    Distributed Transaction Coordinator
Health Key and Certificate Management Service
    Net Logon
    NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing
    QoS RSVP
    Remote Desktop Help Session Manager
    Remote Registry
    Smart Card
    Telnet
Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service
    WMI Performance Adapter

    4. Download and run ATF Cleaner and select all the checkboxes in the program then hit the empty selected button, http://www.snapfiles.com/get/atfcleaner.html
    5. Download and run Auslogics Disk Defrag, http://auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag/download
    6. Download and run Auslogics Registry Defrag, http://auslogics.com/en/software/registry-defrag/download
    7. Run Disk Cleanup, Start< All Programs< Accessories< Sytstem Tools< Disk Cleanup. When its done calculating how much free space you can save make sure you check all the checkboxes except for compress old files.
    8. Click Start< Right Click My Computer and click Properties. Click the advanced tab< Under performance hit settings< click advanced again and under virtual memory click change< Make sure your harddrive is selected and select the option that says system managed size and click the set button. Now Click ok on all the windows to close them out and reboot the computer.
    9. I see you have Windows XP Service Pack 2 installed. Please install Service Pack 3 as its another service pack that will make sure your computer is up to date with security patches, http://softwarepatch.com/windows/windows-xp-service-pack-3.html

Let me know if you had any difficulties following my detailed instructions. :)

    Evan,
    Miz,

I removed the 2 HJT entries.

    1) Done. Remove all unused programs.
    2) Done. Unchecked the Windows components.
    3) Done. Updated all the services.msc entries.
    4) Done. Used ATF.
    5) Is this much different from the Windows Defrag? I'm currently getting a MSC error since I upgraded to XP SP3
    6) Is there need to defrag a registry? I've read on here that those items don't help much.
    7) Done. Ran Diskcleanup.
    8) Done. Made the option switch.
    9) Done. Uploaded and installed XP SP3. Please read #5 above.

I believe it helped a bit, but is there any way to tell the true baseline and other areas I can research?

BTW, I removed NAV and kept AVGFree. That worked out fine -- only have one program now.

My main concern is Disk Defrag error: "MMC has detected an error in a snap-in. It is recommended that you shut down and restart MMC. "

So you are getting this error whenever you start the Windows Defragmenter? I don't use the built in windows defragment utility anymore because the Disk Defrag from Auslogics does a better job at defragmenting your harddrive and it has more options. You can use the Registry defrag utility safely as it will cause no harm to your computer. It doesn't clean the registry but just compresses it. It creates a restore point ahead of time so you can reverse whatever changes were made in case it corrupts your system.

If you want to repair the Windows Defragmenter then take a look here, http://www.andreasroom.com/blog/archive/2004/01/18/defrag.aspx.

BTW I am happy to hear that your computer is running faster than before. Let me know if you have any more questions. :)

    helpme2008,
You have been givin excelent advice here for your problem. One other thing I noticed in your HJT log was the number of startup items you have. That would be the 04 items in your log. You have 39 starting everytime you boot up. I have only 5 . The more programs you have start at boot the longer it will take to boot. You really don't need most of them as you can always start the when needed.
OK, click on start then run , type in msconfig and click OK. When the window comes up click the startup tab. The items with the checkmark in are the ones that are starting . Go to this site and you can do a search for each item you have in that startup list. The ones you don't want take the check out. When done click OK and then reboot. When you reboot a window will come up. There is a small box that you must put a check in and then click ok. Then do another HJT and post it here.
This should improve your startup a bunch
