Hi.
Every time that IE7 crashes, Dr. Watson crashes. Must I reinstall XP, or can I find Dr. Watson to reinstall? Is there a fix? Is Dr. Watson even useful or necessary? Thank you.

Hi, NeverBoring.

• How to disable Dr. Watson for Windows

Perhaps Event Viewer will shed some more specific light on your particular issue.

Instructions About How to Access and Use "Event Viewer ":

• Click Start.
• Right-click My Computer.
• Select "Manage" to open the "Computer Management" window.
(Event Viewer will be displayed under the "System Tools" directory item.)
• Expand "Event Viewer" and then select "Application ", "Security ", and "System" to view the logs.
• Look for "error" events that occurred around the time your problem occurred. These events will be displayed as icons with either a white X on red background or a black exclamation point on yellow background. In the security section of Event Viewer, events of possible concern are ones that display a padlock icon instead of a key icon.
• Double-click on an individual event to open the "Event Properties" window which shows details about the event.
• You can use the up/down arrow buttons in the "Event Properties" window to move your focus to other events in the list.
• Use the button below the up/down arrows to copy the details for an event to your clipboard for pasting elsewhere.
• Click on the "http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp" link in the "Event Properties" window to view more information from Microsoft about the event.

Alternatively, Event Viewer may be accessed as follows.
• Click Start > Run...
• Type eventvwr.msc in the "Open:" field.
• Click the OK button.

Just a hunch...

Microsoft released an urgent security patch for IE on December 17 which apparently requires a computer restart to complete the patch process.

Did you restart the computer after applying the patch (or did you defer until later and then forgot to restart)?

EDIT: That might explain why IE is crashing (perhaps frequently as of late). Might also explain why Dr. Watson chokes too.

Hi mailman,
Thank you for the reply. I copied some of the error messages I found from your sugestion, eventvwr.msc. I always restart after an update.
These three errors fall together quite often. I have accepted that I may have a unsolved problem with MSIE 7. The dr.watson crash has occured for almost as long as I have installed it with MSXP3.

Faulting application drwtsn32.exe, version 5.1.2600.0, faulting module dbghelp.dll, version 5.1.2600.5512, fault address 0x0001295d.

Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.5512, faulting module ieframe.dll, version 7.0.6000.16762, fault address 0x000714d2.

Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 7.0.6000.16762, faulting module ieframe.dll, version 7.0.6000.16762, fault address 0x0007102c.

The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted.

This ERROR occures often:
The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( InverseLaunchIPI ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. Thank you very much for your additional details.

If you can recall when the IE crashes started occurring (and what software/hardware changes you may have made immediately prior to that), that may be helpful.

May be nothing, but the version of your faulting module dbghelp.dll (library for Dr. Watson), version 5.1.2600.5512, is identical to your Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) version. I'm certainly outside of my comfort zone here :) but I wonder whether something might be amiss with your HAL.

============

The three errors you stated that occur together quite often involve both Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer (and Dr. Watson, which I think you stated has been problematic since approximately the time you installed SP3).

According to CastleCops, that Browser Helper Object (BHO) is attributed to "FolderBox ".

FolderBox 1.20 is described as follows.
FolderBox apparently interacts with both Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer. Therefore, perhaps FolderBox is involved in causing your three crashes that occur together quite often (because those crashes also involve both Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer).

I'd be inclined to uninstall FolderBox and see if that clears up your IE crash problems any.

==========

I'd also be inclined to investigate any other "enhancements" you may be using for Windows Explorer and/or Internet Explorer such as quoted from your HJT log below.

Perhaps ieSpell doesn't play well with FolderBox.

==========

According to your HJT log,
that error appears to be attributed to your "Visual IP InSight Client (TDS)" service (developed by Visual Networks?). Perhaps you can find helpful information about that error at their web site.

Hi again, NeverBoring. :)

I don't mean to "pester" you or others reading this thread. However, I found some more information I think is worth mentioning regarding your computer's performance (although it may not be directly related to your crash issue).

According to AnswersThatWork.com,
Given your CPU speed and RAM are on the "lighter side ", PCTSPK.EXE might make excessive use of your CPU and pagefile (and unnecessarily compete against other applications).
