for some reason i can no longer drag and drop files and folders from one place to another. i can:
    • move them around on the desktop
    • manually copy and paste them to a new destination (keyboard shortcuts and pup-up menu)
    • re-arrange my start menu programs
    • move them with the mouse from program menu to desktop
    • delete them
but what i cannot do is grab them with my mouse and drag them to a different folder or drive, and have them be moved there. when moving to another drive the little + shows that i am going to copy it there, but it does not after letting go. all the keyboard shortcuts for moving files around to not work while moving them either.

this is driving me insane. does anyone have any ideas?

    Try going here:http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Scroll down to line 233 and on right= Enable Drag and Drop.

To use the Regedits: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

    Did you double-click on it?
    And click Allow?

when i double click on a folder, it opens. when i double click on a file, it opens. i am not sure about what this "click allow" is. but it is not in the properties of the folder/file. everything works just fine, except that when i move the icon to a new destination (a different folder) it does not move to the new place.

When I asked "Did you double-click on it" I meant the file you downloaded from Kellys Korner. The same for "Allow" or it could just be "Yes ".

yup, i came across that one. all my functions work fine, except when i grab something, and move it to another location on the harddrive, it does not copy over to the new location just by dragging it.

I'm running out of ideas. I suppose you could run the System File Checker to check for corrupted files.

"To do this simply go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

    sfc /scannow

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem. "
You may need your OS CD.

    drag and drop FIXED!

so i got sick of trying to fix the drag and drop thing. tried all the regesty fixes, reboots, escape key what have you, and did some other computer "spring cleaning ".. firefox crashed or something, and i had to re search google for the drag and drop problem i was having. must have changed my search query a tad because i came across a little bit of information. while installing some things i got a low disk warning--whether or not it has to do with anything we'll never know, but it did the disk cleanup thing--somewhere along the way, something in internet explorer got scrued (censorship is for the weak!) up, and on this page i saw that IE has things to do with windows explorer, it uses the same registry keys or something who knows. but it said i should go to add/remove programs and select on IE, and repair it. well, i go there, and alas IE was "deleted" (yes you cant delete IE, but it was not on the list) so i windows updated IE back on my computer and bingo. drag and drop is now re enabled. so, hopefully by writing all this random nonsense, i can help out some people who are having this problem!

    short story:
drag and drop does not work? try reinstalling internet explorer.

Well done. It would have been a long time before I'd tried that........
Who cares how you fix it as long as you fix it,eh?
