The screen on my monitor is shifted about 5 inches to the left. I tried ctrl+alt+the right arrow, but nothing happened. I cannot get to Control Panel as the Start button is not visible. Any ideas?
    Thanks for your help

Does your monitor have front panel controls (commonly using an onscreen menu) that can be used to shift the picture horizontally?

If you're unsure, what is the make/model of the monitor and just for completion what graphic driver (and version) are you using?

The monitor does have controls, but I already moved the picture to 100% right and down to 11% vertical ( I failed to mention that the pic was also shifted up.
The monitor is an HP f1905e. Not sure about the graphic driver- can't get to control panel to check.

To get to Device manager press and release the Left Window and Pause/Break keys at the same time, then select hardware tab etc...

To start in safe mode, as your computer is starting up tap away at the F8 key until you see a startup menu and select Safe Mode from there.

Sorry for my ignorance, but where is the Left Window key?

When I boot while tapping the F8 key it asks me to select boot device, with choices:
    - 1st floppy
    - SM-Lite- on DVDRW
    - 4m- ST31608____
    - Generic USB SD Reader
    - Generic USB CF Reader
    - Generic USB SM Reader

Select ST31608 - that is your hard drive - you should then get to a menu offering you SAfe Mode. If not you will need to hit F8 repeatedly again after selecting the hard drive.

On a standard keyboard it's between the Left Ctrl and Alt keys, it has the windows logo on it.

Chose the 4m- ST31608 option then continue tapping F8, a new menu will appear (select Safe mode from there), once in safe mode if everything appears ok change your resolution to 800x600 then reboot to see if the problem continues.

    Same problem in Safe mode

The other question was what graphics driver I have. Not sure. The options I find that look logical are:
    - video controller (VGA)
    - video codex
    - legacy video capture

Thank you for your help so far!

If you post the model no. of your computer - an HP I guess, we can point you to the driver download.

If you look under Display Properties > Settings > Advanced > Adapter you should see details of the graphics card/chip - post these.

I am suspicious of the monitor - have you the opportunity to try it on another computer or to try another monitor on your computer?

The computer is an Asus, built by a friend. It has a pentium 4 processor.
Can't seem to find "Display properties" Since the picture is shifted to the left I cannot see the Start button and, therefore, cannot get to Control Panel.
I'll try hooking it up to another computer.

Right click on a blank area of the Desktop and select Properties from the menu. Post the details please.
Glad to hear that tested out OK :) Now we are lookinfg at wonky drivers or graphics card.

Do you know the model number of the motherboard? If not see if you can run Everest - look under Motherboard - e.g. Motherboard Name Asus A8N-SLI Premium

I was able to download the graphics driver from Asus and install it, but the problem is still there. Any other ideas?

I really need to know what your graphics card/chip is and the name of your Asus mobo before making further suggestions.

It is quite possible that you have a graphics card installed and are using that rather than the onboard graphics chip, if any. The drivers from the Asus site would be for onboard graphics and if you are running a graphics card updating those drivers would have no effect.

So please post the details as requested - mobo name and graphics adaptor.

Downloaded Everest and evrything went normally, but nothing happened. I tried it on the computer I'm using now and the prgram popped up automatically, so I know it works ( I could tell you the motherboard of this computer!). I suspect I have to open the program, but since I can't see the Start button I can't.
Thanks for your continued patience and help!
