Right, this is a bit complicated so dont not read.
I have winxp pro installed and have a problem with my CD writer. I have a seperate writer and DVD/CD drive. When I double click on my writer icon in my computer it opens it as if it were a folder, on ME it prompts me to insert a disk. I can drop files into this 'folder' and write them using the WINXP burn feature, however no other writing programs such as CDRWIN, Clone CD, EasyCD etc will recognize that I have a writer installed. The writer works fine in ME just not XP, I have looked for XP compatible drivers but found none due to the fact I dont really know what make the writer is as it came with my PC and it doesn't tell me what make it is in the device manager. Pretty sure it's a Phillips IDE-CD R/RW 8x4x32 though, that's just a slightly educated guess. In the device manager it says the writer is installed and working properley.
I really need my writer to work as it should with XP and dont know what else to do, tried almost everything.
Pwease help, going mad. I really dont want to go back to ME as it ***** muchos.

Well, without opening the PC up I have found out that the writer is a Philips CDD4801 CD-Writer, I am however still unable to find any drivers for it. If anybody can help me with that i'd be grateful.
This maybe a long shot and only if the current driver has become corrupted, but if you're happy (able?) to use the registry editor, this from MS may be worth a try? http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];Q320553
Nah, I dont think the driver was corrupted it just doesn't work from what I can tell. I did try your suggestion anyway in the hope it might bring some luck but it didn't.
If it helps any further, this is the problem I am having, the writer does not have any label on it. I think it should have a CD R label.
OK another long shot. Windows can be like that...
I had problems with XP only occasionally detecting my LG CDRW till I changed the drive order on IDE2. After switching the DVD drive to the master position and slaving the CDRW to it on IDE2 I've had no more problems. Problem is it took me a few months to try this combination. Sometimes you gotta try anything, even with XP.
SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to record (burn) data to a compact disc recordable (CD-R) drive or compact disc rewritable (CD-RW) drive, you may not have the option to send data to the CD-ROM drive.
When you view the properties of the CD-R drive or CD-RW drive, you may notice that the Recording tab is not displayed in the CD Drive ( drive_letter Properties dialog box, where drive_letter is the letter of the CD-R drive or CD-RW drive.
NOTE: To view the CD Drive ( drive_letter Properties dialog box, click Start, click My Computer, right-click the CD-R drive or CD-RW drive that you want, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu that appears.
CAUSE
This issue can occur when the drive is misdetected as a non-recordable device.
RESOLUTION
ezbob, that partly helped. Now when I double click the writer icon it asks me to insert a disk, but the writer is still not recognized by any writing programs. It says when I try:
No CDROM recording device was found on the SCSI or IDE bus.
>>Edit>>
After another double click it has reverted back to opening as a folder again.

Get aspichk this will install the adaptec aspi layer for CD-R drives, and will probably fix the problem you are describing. (especially handy if you are using the pirate build 2250)
Good luck.
Just run a search in google to find a copy of it, and read the README that comes with it.
