I've been having some minor problems with my Windows Media (using XP Home) so I decided to download Media 11. Everthing downloaded fine except now I don't know how to confirm which version is installed.

I can find no Help tab which is usually where you go to find this info.

Where do I find the version number?

PS: By the way, how new/old is Media 11 actually?

I know there is a Media 12 but I usually like to wait awhile before getting the new kid on the block.

Several ways to do this but one way would be from within mediaplayer hit keycombo of cntrl+1 than cntrl+m that should give you the toolbar and access to "help ", your familiar with.

Another would be right clicking on the mediaplayer shortcut and select properties>open file location. Once the folder comes up, either float mouse over wmplayer.exe to show popup of version or rightclick on it to check properties which will reveal the version number.

wmplayer.exe is located in program files\windows media player. (if you wish to browse to it unstead)

One of the above will get ya' there.

Hi I believe Windows Media Player came out late 2006! For the help file did you try and right click on the left bottom of the player and see if its check where it says 'show classic menu'? Besides this I don't know where you would find this without going into your registry. This I would not recommend if your not comfortable in the registry.

    Ann,

Thanks a heap! They both work perfectly. I've got Media 11 which is apparently a year or two old.

Do you (or anybody) know how long Media 12 has been out and is it bug free?

    Have a great Thanksgiving,

    Rob

    Hi Rob,

Where have you seen media player 12 for download? As far as I know it is not available as a final or is still in beta. Could be wrong since I haven't kept up with news on such. I do know there are various torrent sites and what not that offer one but I wouldn't trust these. If it isn't offered by Microsoft's update site as a download I'd steer clear.

I am not sure where I saw Media 12 mentioned but you are probably right that they were talking about the beta version

Hi, my name's Cody, and I'm working with the Windows Media Outreach Team to help answer questions folks might have about Windows Media Player.

While Windows Media Player 12 is currently under development, it has not been released yet. Microsoft did show off some of the new features official demonstration of the player, though. I'll second goddez1's comment and warn you to be really wary of any non-Microsoft website that is offering you a download.

But just in case anyone's interested, I did find this great link that describes some of those new features the player will offer: http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/pos...media-player-12s-surprising-new-features.html

I hope the link is interesting!

    Thanks,

    Cody

    trpaja-

Glad you found it interesting! As far as when it'll be released, I'm not on the development team, so your guess is as good as mine. According to that article, it'll come out bundled with Windows 7, but who knows? Your best bet might just be checking in with the Windows Media homepage at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/default.mspx every now and then for any updates.

    Cheers,

    Cody
