Can't get Autoplay to work on both my CD-RW drives

Autoplay is enabled for both my CD-RW Drives, E: and F:, and I have set Autoplay on both drives to always ask me what I want to do, for all disc types and file types. However, although all the audio and/or data discs that I insert (either burned or commercial) are sensed by the drives (they flash their LEDs), the Autoplay window never appears and the inserted disc doesn't spin up. In order to access the disc and deal with what's on it I have to open a "My Computer" window and double-click on the drive's icon. Then the disc spins up and a window opens and shows the disc's contents. From there I can play or open the files and everything is OK. But why can't I get Autoplay to work?

    Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Try the Microsoft AutoPlay Repair Wizard.

It scans your computer devices to find defective AutoPlay settings, and attempts to fix those it finds.

    Mattman,

Thank you. I looked into your suggestion, but "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers" (I'm sure) refers to my hard disk drives, and my current problem is with my CD-RW drives. A couple of years ago I tried updating those IDE/ATA drivers (just because I had some idle time), and found that I then couldn't reboot my PC. I wound up having to reinstall Windows.

Next I tried uninstalling my CD-RW drives from Device Manager and letting the system find and reinstall them after rebooting. Result: no change at all.

Next, I went to the site (http://support.microsoft.com/search/...3comm=1&res=20) that you mentioned and to my surprise I saw that the following article exactly described my problem:

The Autoplay Function Does Not Work and the Current Media Does Not Appear in 'My Computer' When You Insert a CD or DVD

When you insert a CD or DVD into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, you may experience one or both of the following problems:
    • The AutoPlay function does not work. Programs or files that you expect to start or open automatically do not start or open when you insert the media into the drive.
    • The CD-ROM or DVD-ROM icon in My Computer is not updated when you change media. For example, if you replace an audio CD with a program installation CD and then open My Computer, the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM icon may still display "Audio CD ".

That is exactly my problem! So I downloaded and tried to install the hotfix, only to find that even though it was described as revised in 2007, it was created specifically for Win XP with SP1, and a popup message told me it wouldn't work because I have "a later service pack" (i.e., SP2) installed. The article also said: "This problem was corrected in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2." However, I have the problem even though I have SP2 and all subsequent Windows updates.

Next, following a link on your suggested help site, I went to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330135/en-us and saw this:

The AutoRun feature or the AutoPlay feature does not work when you insert a CD-ROM in the CD drive

When you insert a CD-ROM in the CD drive, the AutoPlay feature or the AutoRun feature may not work or may not be available. However, your CD drive may work correctly in every other way.

I followed all the steps in this article and none of them made any difference.

    Any further suggestions? Thanks!

P.S. I just saw the response posted by Arie. I'll try that and report back. Thanks!

    Arie,

I downloaded and ran AutoFix.exe (AutoPlay Wizard) and was told it could not fix the problem. Here is the log:

Hmm. It doesn't specify what the problems are.

At this point I think I'll run sfc /scannow and see what happens.

    Frank D

Postscript: Running sfc/ scannow found nothing wrong.

It's not a big problem. I guess I can live with it.

Success! --> Autoplay is now working on both my CD-RW drives!

Whoops!!! Correction to my previous post: It's working! :) I don't know what combination of events did it but AutoPlay is now working the way it should.

Thanks to Mattman and Arie for your help! :D
