Wierd desktop, unable to change.

A couple weeks ago my desktop got changed. I don't have any idea what I may have done to cause this. I now have a "taskbar" down the left side of screen that is approximately 2-1/2 inchese wide with "Folder Tasks ", "Other Places ", and "Details" headings with drop-down lists. In addition, I can no longer adjust my icons. What did I do and how can I change this?

I right clicked on the desktop and made sure auto arrange is not checked, but don't know where to go from here. Thank you. ItsGramma

On occasion, due to registry error, Windows XP starts showing "common tasks" on the Desktop. It becomes quite irritating since it overlaps the desktop wallpaper and one is left scratching their head trying to figure out how to get rid of it.

In Windows XP, it happens when the desktop.htt file entry in registry gets corrupted. Windows XP considers Desktop as a normal folder and shows common tasks on Desktop just like other folders.
