I have tried restoring from multiple restore points. Each time it tells me that it changed nothing. Could this be because before I restored I excluded my virtual memory partition from the restore preferences? I am trying to reload my old VIA chipset drivers as I have one in there now that is from Unibrain and it is showing an error in the device manager. thank you

Hi sussertown. Try disabling and re-enabling system restore by following the instructions here, http://www.winxptutor.com/systemrestore.htm. This will delete all of your system restore points but it looks like none of them are working anyway. So after following the instructions above, create a new restore point.

    Thanks

I can certainly do that, but I have to wonder: if the restore points are there, they must contain information and if they do, why won't they work. Is there anything to the fact that I first disabled my D partition from being included before I ran the restore?

    A hardware driver is broken

I used a driver tool to locate what it called "updated" drivers. It downloaded and I installed two drivers to replace my VIA chipset drivers. These were not from VIA but from Unibrain. One seems to be working and the other is damaged and keeps trying to install. I tried rolling back. I tried to reinstall the via 4-in-1. The correct drivers don't recognize the need to change the installed set. The restore will not work right now for some reason. I keep uninstalling the defective driver and it won't go away.

Did you try tapping F8 at startup and selecting last known good configuration?

It would probably be best if a moderator could merge your threads because there is information in this thread that rules out some approaches which would be logical fixes based solely upon the information in your other thread.

Would last known good configuration work when the system seems to be running well?

If you are pleased with the way things are then I'm not sure I understand the following:

You can make a new restore point and then try last last known good. If last known good doesn't recognize a damaged driver then we can move on to other solutions but I wouldn't dismiss the approach without first trying it. Making a new restore point should permit you to get back to this point if you are unhappy with what happens after last know good configuration.

    ;)

    Okay

I'll try it. What I mean by damaged is the yello triangle in device manager.

Try Rockstars instructions and get back to us with whether Last Known Good Configuration worked or not.

system restore is a nice feature , when it works but it does not always work especially when you need it - whether windows or the file is corrupted - who knows
There is a third party open source program aw well that will do a system restore function that you might want to try as well in the future
    Its called "Erunt "
