I installed a clean win xp professional OS on a new rig (quad processor), no issues. Then I did a Acronis recovery from a uniprocessor pc, and installed the correct mobo drivers. Still no issues. The I did a restart and a repair install to load the mobo sata and AHCI drivers. The pc restarts, but everytime I open a program from windows, for example Windows Explorer, or Software from the configuration screen, or Network Connections, I get a window with "Windows Installer", waiting for something to load.
The version of windows on my old pc is sp3, after the repair install (I used a win xp slipstreamed with sp2), I see sp2 on my info screen of computer properties.
What should/can I do to solve this Installer window?

How should I best restore an image of the system and user files from a uniprocessor pc to a multiprocessor machine? I know of Acronis True Image, and I know ntbackup.
I will try your solution, but I think I should also better do a repair install from the same sp-level cd as the original system, ie I will make a slipstreamed sp3 version of my windows xp cd. Question remains, how would you recommend I make a copy of my windows xp system and user files from an old pc to a different HAL-computer (from uni- to multiprocessor).
After you re-imaged the drive how many processors were showing in Device Manager. It may be that Windows Installer wants to install the processor driver?
I would have thought that you would have installed the SATA drivers at F6 on the installation screen, not by running a repair install. XP has only very limited SATA driver support - my Asus A8N-SLI is an example of where the SATA drivers must be loaded at F6 or the drives are not recognised.
I had a mobo exactly like yours until it blew up after the southbridge fan failed and subsequently grilled the southbridge.
I installed the correct sata/ahci drivers with F6, but I think that doing a Acronis recovery did overwrite those drivers (the image is from a uniprocessor mobo with different sata chipset: KT600). So I did a repair, reinstalled the correct sata/ahci drivers, but in my stupidity did the repair with a sp2 win xp cd!
At the moment I am making a slipstream of a virgin win xp cd, with sp3, and with the correct sata/ahci drivers integrated. And after doing the Acronis recovery, in fact installing the uniprocessor setup, I will try and load all the correct mobo drivers; before any reboot.
I will keep you posted.
Hi Brice3010, I did try that and it failed, the SATA drivers must be copied including the .txt file onto a floppy disk then do the F6 trick then S and windows will look at the floppy and wait for you to select them depending on your system.
This is the crazy bit CD, USB Stick will not work.
