I would be worrying about getting rid of your malware/virus infection first, before I would be concerned about a low VM message.
Thanks, this is a problem on my home computer. Multiple problems (Granddaughter downloads a LOT). Only thing I can think of to do (running Windows XP) is to do a system restore. Can give more info when I get home.
Whenever the Virtual Memory message pops up for me the first thing I do is right-click the taskbar and choose "Task Manager". Then I choose the "Processes" tab. I then click the "Mem Usage" column header to arrange the processes in descending order based on how much memory they are taking up. Using this method I was able to determine that my Linksys Wireless Card software has a huge memory leak and at times uses up as much as 150MB of memory!
That being said, spyware and other unintentional downloads (like many browser toolbars) will most certainly cause too much memory to be used, because you eventually will be running so many programs in the background at once.
Personally, I use a combination of AVG8 free edition and Super Anti Spyware to help keep my computer virus/spyware free. And the best part is, it doesn't cost me a cent.
Also, if you are using XP you may want to consider creating a special "Limited" user account for your granddaughter to use as this will prevent her from downloading and installing whatever she wants on to your computer.
