I had vista and XP dual booting on one hard drive. I formatted the Vista partition because it was an evaluation copy and I needed the space. I still get the startup screen that asks me if I want to use the earlier version of windows. I would like to get rid of it and just boot into XP. Is this possible? Thanks for your help. Sallie

Hi Sallie. The way to remove the option to boot into the nonexistant Vista OS is to edit your boot.ini file. Once you edit it your computer will boot directly into Windows XP without you having to decide witch Operating System to choose from.

    1. Click Start
    2. Click My Computer
    3. Right click a blank area of my computer and click properties
    4. Click the advanced tab
    5. Under startup and recovery click settings
    6. Look where is says to edit the startup options file manually click edit text
    7.Click edit
    8. Post the contents of the boot.ini file in your next post. :)

    startup screen error

Is this what I should do with Vistabootpro? Thanks, Sallie

    Manage OS Entries
    Managing OS Entries

The entries in the OS list are color coded as follows:

    Black "“ normal non-default entry

    Blue "“ normal default entry

Red "“ "˜rogue’ entry which contains an error

(Rogue entries are usually caused by having an OS listed which points to an unknown drive "“ either the drive letter was entered wrong, or a drive letter has been changed or removed and is no longer valid)

    Changing the OS display order

To change how the OS list is displayed during boot, select the entry you wish to move up/down from the OS List, click on the up or down arrows to change its order in the list, and then click the Apply Updates button to save your changes.

    OS Display Options

To change the default OS, select the entry in the OS list which you want to become the new default, click on the Set as Default check box, then click the Apply button. The default entry will show up in Blue.

I also got this message: "OS detection error" "VistaBootPro has detected that Vista is either not installed or is installed on a hidden drive. You may experience minor problems using VistaBootPro and/or making changes to your BCD Registry. "

Probably because I already formatted the drive. The drive is not hidden and the letter it was on is D. Sallie

I am so thankful for the advice to use the free program, VistaBootPro. It was so easy. First I read the help files. Then went in and deleted Vista. I changed the seconds it was taking before the boot (30 to 0)and changed the name of the OS back to XP. Restarted my computer and it came right on.

Thank you to Arie for this site and advice and thanks to all the people at BBS for always being ready to help. You perform a valuable service!

    Sallie:)

Cool. I did see your previous post, but didn't have time to check & answer. Since you found your way around the program you'll remember better :D

BTW, if Vista BootPRO doesn't work for you (I had some problems where it would complain about errors when saving changes), EasyBCD is another popular free alternative ( http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1 ).
