KB953356 - SP3 Fix for AMD Processors

I noticd that MS released a download for those wanting to install SP3 on an AMD processor. Has anyone tried this? and have you had any problems?
Thanks.

Have to be careful here - it only applies to loading an image produced on an Intel powered computer to an AMD powered computer ....

Error message after you upgrade a computer that uses a processor other than an Intel processor to Windows XP Service Pack 2 or to Windows XP Service Pack 3: "STOP: 0x0000007E" ....
Quote:
This problem occurs when a System Preparation (Sysprep) image is created on a computer that uses an Intel processor and is then deployed to a computer that does not use an Intel processor.

Most computers include an image that the manufacturer created by using the Sysprep tool. Sysprep lets the computer manufacturer generate an image that can be used on different computers.
My main box runs an AMD dual core CPU - I have installed several of the beta releases of SP3, the Release Candidates and now the RCM version, all without issue.

Pete,
If you read the instructions carefully you will see that it recommends you install that file before installing SP3. They recently, this month July, seemed to have changed the writeup. Are you saying that this is not the way to avoid the problem of the rebooting?

Most people wouldn't know.

You can download it to any computer with a non-Intel processor. As the download page says:

Quote:
Overview
Install this update before you install Windows XP Service Pack 3 to prevent an issue in which your computer may restart continuously after you upgrade to SP3 on systems with non-Intel processors. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.
If you don't need it it won't do any harm.

I am a bit confused. Pete, are you saying this download doesn't solve the problem of the AMD processor continually restarting after an SP3 install? Or don't you know or are not sure?

Not at all - I merely pointed out, indirectly, that the problem was likely to occur on OEM computers which have an AMD CPU and were originally imaged at source with an image created on an Intel based computer.

My own AMD based computer is home built and the OS installed from a retail CD - hence I experienced no issues. It would seem that the problem only arises on imaged drives as outlined above, but one wonders which CPU base was used to create the original XP CD and it's successors.

Bottom line, as Arie has posted, installing the patch will do no harm if not required.
