I need to run chkdsk but cannot do so from either run/start or from Disc C properties. I set it to come on when windows restarts but it does not. Just restarts without any action taken.

I got an error message from Diskkeeper (defrag utility) but was not able to copy it before system shut down.

Suggestions anyone, I have not tried System Restore yet as had trouble with a corrupt program file yesterday that was repaired prior to nighttime shutdown.

I might add, that when chkdsk has run in the past, it has always done so before the Windows Welcome window and it was my understanding that no programs have loaded at this time. I've tried all variations of restarts including shutting down with power button while programs are running, Chkdsk just will not respond.

    Two approaches ....

    chkdsk.exe is a system file .....

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\chkdsk.exe

As such I suggest you run System File Checker .....

Start > Run > sfc /scannow > Enter, noting the space in the command and having your XP CD handy.

    or....

Boot to the Recovery Console from your XP CD (retail not recovery) and execute the command chkdsk /r - a backup of important data is recommended :)

Thanx Pete. I did run sfc /scannow which, for some reason took almost 45 minutes to complete. The chkdsk function was restored and run from the Disc C properties.

The computer now takes an extremely long time to boot which is a negative change I'm going to have to explore. Once booted all seems to work well.

Since you mentioned an error with Diskkeeper, I might wonder if there is a problem with it. I would try uninstalling it and maybe doing chkdsk again. Try a full check, chkdsk /r.

If it seems to improve you can reinstall Diskkeeper later on.
