My System Restore will not work

Hope its o.k. to include two problem in one since they are connected, I have been unable to uninstall Google Earth and have tried several suggestions and decided to try system restore but that doesen't work either. I have tried 4-5 dates to restore back to but none will work. I get...."This date can not be restored" I would appreciate any suggestions on either or both problems.

Thanks

My System

Sophie

The two problems are not necessarily related and you should start a thread on the failure of Google Earth to install in the Other Software forum.

Give full details as to exactly what happens when you try to install G E including the text of any error messages and a note that you are unable to use System Restore.

As far as System Restore is concerned it is likely that you have a corrupted file in the System Restore data - the only way of resolving this is to turn off System Restore, reboot and start it again. You will lose all previous restore points, but as these are now useless it is no great loss.

When System Restore is reset make a manual restore point and test that it works.

Unhappy System Restore not working

Hi Pete,
Like Sophie, my System Restore does not work (and hasn't for a long time).
I have tried the "Switch off & restart" as you detailed, but it still does not work! I have a friend who also has this problem.
I suspect there is a basic fault in XP, but if you can think of anything else I can try (or anyone?), which is not too complex, I'll give it a go.

Thanks Pete for your reply I tried your suggestion but no luck, now I am not able to get my windows updates. Looks like I may be looking at a complete restore back to factory. If you have any more suggestions please let me know.

Hi Sophia

Don't jump to reinstall yet!

Go to this other windowsbbs link

MS Windows installer 3.1

do only post #2 but add below

additionally after doing all on page 1 Click the HammerHead (page 2) and click Reinstall System Restore.

EDIT: This will likely fix both of your issues and perhaps some you don't know about!

Mike

How to reinstall System Restore in Windows XP?

Hi Pete, when I right click on SR.INF and click Install I get a window that tells me sr.sys was not found and I need the Win XP SP2 CD so I tried the CD in Drive D and Drive E but no luck and I also tried %Windir%\ServicePackFiles folder with no response.

Yes Mike I saw it and have just finished with 92 Windows XP updates, Thanks for your suggestion of the Dial-a-fix program most my updates were security, But the system restore is still not working, I tried clicking on the second icon in the download but it would not open.

Hi Sophie

By other Icon did you mean the HammerHead?

It may not open if there is any proccess still running in DAF on the first page.

If so after you do all the updates then reboot the computer and run Dial-A-Fix again before doing or opening anything.

Put in your Windows CD then go stright to the HammerHead (which is page 2 of Dial-A-Fix) and click Reinstall System restore!

Sophie

Search your hard drive - enable search hidden files and folders and see what comes up - then point the reinstallation of System Restore to it - given that it exists on your system, which it should.

FYI on my desktop running XP Pro SP3 RC2 the file is located in ....

C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$\sr.sys
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\sr.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\sr.sys

By other icon I mean after I downloaded the Dial-a-fix I had two icons one was a zip file and the other was secedit.exe it will not open, but is that what you mean when you say 2nd page. I am sorry but I didn't see anything called HammerHead. I will go back and follow your directions above a little closer and in the Dial-a-fix do I check everything again? I will be back after I go through your instructions to post results. Again Thanks
