Unhappy Cursor Stops Blinking - Inativates Mouse

My cursor stops blinking while I am typing. When that happens, my mouse and keyboard become inactive - I can type but nothing appears on screen. If I wait a few seconds, everything returns to normal. This occurs in all programs and in google. I have windows XP and run MS Office Professional 2003. It is very annoying to enter figures and discover only the last 2 digits were actually entered or only part of a word. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Might look in Control Panel->Mouse and disable the "hide pointer while typing" option to see if that helps.

I tried the mouse control suggestion but no luck.
