I have a problem with an error message when trying to access control panel in Windows XP Home.

I click on Start and hover over Control Panel (I have it set as a drop down list). There is a longer than usual wait and the error box appears. The box seems a standard type error box with the words "Modem Options" at the top. Alongside the red and white cross are the words "Some of the application components could not be located. Please reinstall PC Suite ". If I Ok this box it disappears and the Control Panel drop down box appears.

I first tried to uninstall and re-install PC Suite but something was wrong and I was unable to uninstall in the first place. I posted this problem in a Nokia forum and was pointed to a piece of software to enable the PC Suite to uninstall (I seems that is a common problem). I succeeded with this and re-installed PC Suite and that is now working perfectly. However, I am still getting the original error message as described above. The Nokia forum was unable to assist further but the suggestion was that the problem is in Windows. I have tried running two Registry cleaners but neither have cured the problem.

Before I try a repair from the Windows boot disk, does anyone have any ideas that I could try first, please?

This may not be exactly your problem but it can do no harm:

    1. Using Explorer go to C:\Windows\System32 (or \System). Arrange the View by Type and look for files with cpl as the extension. You may have to display the full filename in Folder Options to see them. Check from their Properties which are not Microsoft.

    2. Create a folder, say, TempCPL in My Documents. Move the non-Microsoft cpl files one by one to the new folder and open Control Panel to see if the problem has gone. After detecting the cpl file responsible for the problem, leave it in the TempCPL folder and move back the other cpl files to their original folder (e.g. system32 or system).

    3. There are copies of most of them in C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386.

Thank you for your suggestion. Unfortunately it didn't work. Still, it did give me a reason to test Directory Opus 9 which I have just bought. It passed with flying colours and made finding and moving the .cpl files extremely easy.
