When I double click a .ini file in windows explorer, notepad opens with the following message: "The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect." and a blank file appears.

Any suggestions on what's going wrong?
    Thks.

Hi, Flox74. Welcome to Windows BBS! :)

Can you open the .ini file as follows?

    1. Right-click the .ini file.
    2. Select "Open With... ".
This will pop up an "Open With" window displaying a list of programs. (Notepad will likely be near the top of the list as a "Recommended" program.)
    3. Select Notepad.
    4. Click the OK button.

If you successfully open the .ini contents into Notepad with the steps above, then note there is a checkbox below the program list in the "Open With" window.
If you place a check in that checkbox before clicking the OK button, then I expect double-clicking on an .ini file in Windows Explorer will open the .ini file in Notepad. However, I do not know whether the checkbox setting would affect the functionality of the .ini file or not when it is used by programs.

I cannot open ini file with right click on mouse and selecting the notepad program. I have correctly associated ini files to open with notepad. However the file can be oppened with MS Word. What works is opening notepad.exe and the drag and drop the .ini file in there.

Got the solution on another forum. In the open action (Properties of the ini files) there was an " at the end of the command. Took away the " and worked.
