I would want to know the method of getting rid of 98 OS. I have double Os in my system. I tried formatting 98 from xp using the format option. But it says few
programs are being used by others. I have 98 in c drive and xp in D drive. Tel me a good way to get rid of 98.

    Hi knsusil and welcome!

The way to do that is boot to XP and delete the Windows 98 system folder from the C: drive. Then edit the boot.ini file found on the root of the C: drive to remove the loader line for the Windows 98 system.

The reason you cannot format the C: drive is that there are three bootloader files on the root of it that are needed to boot XP. They are boot.ini, ntdetect.com, and ntldr. Do not delete those files or XP will not boot.

If you need help editing the boot.ini file, open it with Notepad and copy/paste its contents back here for further. It's a hidden file so you will need to have your view setting to show Hidden and System files. To do that:

Open Windows Explorer or My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View >

Check the box labeled "Show hidden files and folders "

Uncheck the boxes labeled "Hide file extensions for known file types" and "Hide protected operation system files "

    OK out of there.
