I installed it a couple weeks ago. I did so in order to see if it would get rid of an error that was causing my IE6 browser and Explorer.exe to crash with the following Event Error:

    Error:
Application popup: Explorer.EXE - Application Error : The instruction at "0x7729a186" referenced memory at "0x085f4af4 ". The memory could not be "written ".

It did correct that error but it now renders an error and warning when booting as follows:

    Error:
The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Launch permission for the COM Server application with CLSID
    {DCBCA92E-7DBE-4EDA-8B7B-3AAEA4DD412B}
to the user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM SID (S-1-5-18). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.

    and

    Warning:
The Network Access Protection (NAP) enforcement client failed to register with the Network Access Protection Agent (NAPAgent) service. Some network services or resources might not be available. If the problem persists, disconnect and retry the remote access connection or contact the administrator for the remote access server.

These new items do not cause any problem that I can detect, they are merely listed in the Event Viewer. I understand that this is a widespread issue and that MS is working on a solution. That's better than the original problem that caused the browser and explorer.exe crash since it was also widespread but MS didn't seem to be working on a solution for it!

I'll keep SP3 beta as the best of two evils.

I've run SP3 RC1 since it was released without issue - and without any noticeable changes to performance (10% faster claimed by some testers, but how do you measure that?)

That said I also see the two errors in Event Viewer outlined by surferdude and view them in the same light :)

Suppose this will be fixed in the next build.

I did it out of desparation. :D

After installing some updates for Office 2003 (including Office sp3), my PC started acting wierd. I never could get things to work right, so I decided to reformat and reinstall XP Home.

Since I am still using dial-up, there was not enough time (or patients) for me to wait for all of the downloads to install since the release of sp2 (I have the sp2 disk). But I already had the beta of xp sp3 in storage, so I installed it to save time.

My PC is still not right, even after the re-install, so I am just trying to nurse it along until spring break rolls around.

Not sure what happened; maybe I didn't install the board drivers soon enough or something. Or maybe it was the beta sp3 that caused the problems (or Office sp3?).

I got 28 days left to figure it out. ;)

Now running SP3 RC2 - so far without issues.

The NAP issue appears to be fixed - an Event is now recorded as .... Device identified.

    The DCOM error is unchanged.

Is it my understanding that you can only download SP3 RC2 via Windows Update?

Yes, but you must go here first for a script to set a registry key .....

Having loaded the script and then going to Microsoft Update you should be presented with a page offering only SP3 where I noticed a link - which I did not click on - to order a CD.

BigBear - Welcome to the Board :)

Patience I guess - no doubt there will be a Chinese version in the pipeline, but remember SP3 has only been available publically for a couple of days and the English version is always released first followed by other European language versions.

You are not missing anything - there are no new features apart from NAT - a network applet.

Thanks, but I found a separate link after doing a Google search. I downloaded it via broadband at college in just a few minutes.

I noticed some improvement after removing RC1 and installing RC2. A strange thing happened after the update though. My version of XP was about to expire in 13 days, but now the count's back up to 30 days again.

    Strange.

I just did a fresh re-install of XP Home, and I am getting the same error on my machine after installing RC2.

I am also getting MMC errors after installing Diskeeper Lite; plus Ad-Aware causes sysfader to hang, and the program will not finish a scan either.

AVG will not finish a scheduled scan as well.

Time to re-format and re-install...guess I'll be downloading Windows updates via dial-up after all. :(

Edit: What happened to my post count? Looks like I lost about 50 posts.

To me it looks like SP3 is not mature enough so i killed it and made a fresh install got same errors as mentioned by others.
So for now we keep the old SP2 ;)
