I can connect using RDP to another computer on my home network. However that computer does not show the "Remote Desktop" portion of the Remote tab in System Properties so I cannot check whether "Allow user to connect remotely to this computer" is ticked or not. I assumed it wasn't, but found I can't even see it.

The one it works from is XP Professional, the one that doesn't is XP Home. Is it that RDP is not available in XP Home?

RDP is NOT available in XP home.
Remote assistance is "“ but never used it so not sure how that works.

Instead I bought and use a 3rd party software "“ Symantec pcAnywhere.
Works quite well, very powerful along with passwords, several layers of security, ect.
If just using it between networked computers doesn’t require computers to be connected to internet.

Remotely it works great "“ but have to set up port forwarding in router (if any) that receiving computer connected to.

**** "“ sound like sales person "“ hate that.

Thanks .. some quick upgrade advice

Which version/s of Vista will allow RDP? There's so many now to choose from! I assume Home won't, but what other for-use-in-home versions do?

Does Media Centre have RDP? And what version for general use at home would have RDP? When I upgrade PCs this year (they're 6+ years old) I would like to get the appropriate one. One 'feature' I'd love is to open my mail from our lounge PC which is also our stereo player now, which I may buy with Media Centre on. The other machine with the mail wouldn't need to RDP to the streo m/c though.

    Thanks.

MS has an app that will allow the XP Home pc to call out and connect to a Pro machine...Just can't do it the other way around.

I found this. You can take a look at it and see what you think. I've never tried it so I have no idea if it works or not. Also, read all of the responses. There's some information there that you may or may not need if you try this.
