I can only get discs that made by me to work on this drive. Discs that others have made, including Microsoft Works Suite 2006 do not work.

I tried to reinstall the Suite because changing fonts in Works Spreadsheet causes an error report and shutdown of the computer, then a restart.

Changing fonts in Word doesn't cause problems, BTW.:(

Because going to Format>Number in Works Spreadsheet causes my computer to shut down and restart, I want to reinstall Works. I have the disc for Works Suite 2006, but it won't play. The MS Encarta World English Dictionary disc plays, but the mechanism sounds rough. Other commercial CD-ROMs work, as do the ones I have burnt, but not several that I have from Israel; however, perhaps those are simply incompatible with my machine.

I had this problem with Format>Number several months ago, and was recommended to reinstall Works, but before I did that it seemed to have corrected itself, and was working nicely today - until it stopped working and the shutdowns ensued.

My computer is an HP Model a1550y and I run XP Home.

    Any ideas?

Does the drive read the contents of the Works CD's when opened in Explorer? If so you can run Setup directly from there without autoplay or copy the CD's to your hard drive and install from there.

A graunching drive does not sound good news, but maybe it is the head tracking back and forth searching for the first track. This might suggest that a head clean would fix the problem.
