This is what happens when I go to add/remove programs and try to Add/Remove windows components

It also says the specific error code is 0x2 at line 208899972

    What should I do?

    Thanks,

    Gavin

You may have installed a program that has corrupted the setupqry.inf file.

First thing to try is to insert your Windows CD and run the following command from the run menu (START > RUN):

    Code:
    sfc /scannow
This will get windows to search for and replace corrupt windows files and should get the problem sorted.

    Ok try this:

Are you running windows xp professional?

    IF so..

    Step 1
    - Viewing hidden files & folders

1-Open Windows Explorer by right-clicking on My Computer and selecting Explore from the context menu.
    2-Click on the Tools menu.
    3-Select Folder Options.
    4-Click on the View tab.
5-Select Show Hidden Files and Folders.
6-Un-check the box next to Hide protected operating system files (Recommended).
    7-Click Apply and OK

    Step 2
Go to C:\windows\inf (could be c:\winnt\inf) and find setupqry.inf, right click on it and choose rename. Change the filename to something like: old_setupqry.inf

    Step 3
Download http://www.techmonkeys.co.uk/downloads/setupqry.inf to your C:\windows\inf (could be c:\winnt\inf) folder. Note this should not ask you to overwrite the existing file, if it does you renamed the wrong file in the first step, try again

    Step 4
Restart the computer and try the add/remove programs again.

when I navigated to find the file, it wasnt there. i downlaoded your copy, and now it gives me a diff error - it cannto find setupqry.dll

I've clearly deleted a bunch of files by accident or mental retardation. Where should I put this file when I download it?

To be honest I think your going to need a Windows disk to sort it out, lots of your files seem to have got corrupt or deleted.

You can buy the disk with no license key for about £20 in the UK (search for XP Professional Media Kit). It is only cheap because you are simply buying the disk with no license to use it, however you already have the license with your machine.

You could try SP2, but I am not sure it would solve the issues.
