Should it take hours for XP to defrag a FAT 32 40 gig HD the first tme under XP? Using Norton or Windows defrag program?
Will Power saving, hibernation or other savings settings affect the defrag?
Is there a faster program available w/o paying an arm & leg.

    I am new to XP.

    Thank you

Depending on the number of files, the processor speed and amount of ram - yes it can take a while to run defrag for the first time.

ALL Power saving features should be turned OFF.

The defrag engine in XP is very basic - it was written for MS by Diskeeper Corp, who supply more advanced versions - I use Diskeeper Pro.

I suggest you look at Diskeeper Home - not exactly an arm & a leg at $30?

Thank you. I will look into diskkeeper and be sure all power and screen savers are off.
    You have answered my questions.
