    Hi, I'm new here!

I'd like to restrict a user to run only one program, and to not be able to run any other program.

I'd also like the program to load at startup (I know how to do this), and I want an automatic log off when the program user closes the program.

How can I do this? Thanks very much!

Hi, pilau. Welcome to Windows BBS! :)

It might be helpful for us to know whether the computer is running Windows XP Professional or Home.

Make a program load at startup only for Guest user?

    Hi guys!

Please help me understand how can I make a program load at startup without using the "Startup" folder in the Start Menu!

I want the program to load only for the Guest account.

    Thanks very much in advance!

You should put a shortcut to that program in:
    C:\Documents and Settings\LoginName\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

    Thanks. :)

I am not intimately familiar with Windows XP Professional or using Group Policy Editor and System Policy Editor but, until someone else comes along with a possible quick solution, I would start by studying the following Microsoft Knowledge Base documents.

The following Microsoft TechNet article might provide some ideas too.
    • Windows NT Workstation Resource Kit: Managing User Work Environments
Even though this was written for Microsoft NT, I suspect much/all of the article would apply to Windows XP as well.
You might find other helpful documents by searching the Microsoft Knowledge Base for specifics.

    ==========
DISCLAIMER/CAUTION: Editing/cleaning/repairing your computer's registry is potentially dangerous. You might render your computer unstable or even unbootable. Before you edit/clean/repair your registry with any method, be sure you make a backup of your registry and you know how to access and use that backup in case you muck up your computer.

If you decide to manually edit your registry, then be sure you are comfortable with editing the registry and I suggest you save a backup of at least the key you edit ahead of time in case you need/want to reverse your changes. Editing the registry can produce serious undesirable consequences if done incorrectly.

In any case, you should know ahead of time how to restore your original registry settings and prepare to do so in case the need arises.

I also suggest you create a System Restore point before making any changes (regardless of what method you use). System Restore may be accessed as follows.
    • Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

Your way has to have explorer.exe running in order to work, and I'm trying to disable it from working, so I need a different method.
